They are and that is my point. Why is there so little interest in leg destruction? (submission)
Hardball illustrated (at least one of) the perceived weaknesses of leg locks/leg attacks. It is true that the other leg can inflict some trauma. That is one reason that a Judoka can be penalized for being in a bent forward position. It leaves you open to knee strikes among other things.
There is a natural progression in grappling toward the dominant position before submission. The reason is clear enough. To avoid being injured yourself and in the Judo style to be gentle with your opponent.
If you lean forward to get some attachment on the foot the other foot can smash your face (when the uke is on his back) This strike is legal in Vale Tudo but not in some other arena. Knees to a down opponent likewise. Drop elbows or head butting... All valid techniques in Judo but seldom seen outside the UFC and others.

I'm not certain but I think they're even legal in BJJ. Am I off my rocker? If not, why on earth don't you see more?Originally posted by Tant01 View PostI frequently find myself thinking about leglocks while watching the mixed martial sports on TV. Lets face it, very few players really know how to take advantage of the legs. It makes me SCREAM sometimes because it's SO damn obvious! IT'S RIGHT THERE!!!
And damn if they don't see it. Most players try to get past the body scissors without considering the potential for submission there on the lower half. WHY?
The holds are not illegal in THAT game even if they are forbiden in Judo.
Get with the program already! Call it NO HOLDS BARRED and just ignore all the joints in your legs? Ignorance indeed.
It bugs me to see so many missed opportunities for immediate victory.
Press on.

"..the essential role of the leg locks consists above all in determining defensive reactions which can be exploited in order to apply strangulations and arm locks".

Ashi Kanuki
This is a (leg) leglock applied from the bottom position when the Uke is in your (HALF GAURD) Be careful the Uke does not stand up or you can be caught in your own leglock.
Some folks use it as a strangulation/neck dislocation technique often called a "triangle" choke.

I told you I was weak in Leglocks and you just proved it. LOL Anyway, who says you can't learn grappling from print. LOLOriginally posted by Tant01 View PostThere is only a small matter of adjusting the position of your legs to apply torque (toward the outside of his knee) for this hold to become a KNEE dislocation technique.
Think HB? You have the lever in your arms, the fulcrum is your legs. His knee is gone if you bend it in the un-natural direction(s) while it is isolated?
Look at the illustration again...
Press his knee tight between your legs and lean over while holding his foot behind your armpit.
(BE NICE TO YOUR FRIENDS!!!)
IF YOU DO THIS with your fellow students PLEASE BE CAREFUL
GO SLOW enough for them to tap out and DON'T tweak your joints so hard they grind, eh... that shit hurts and MAY REQUIRE SURGERY to fix it!

I know that one and I was counting that as an ankle lock not a leg lock. ( being said in a polite way)Originally posted by Tant01 View PostGreetings...
In Judo there are several varaitions of ... (I want to say eight but don't quote me on that) leglocks.
I'm sure sombo has many nasty tricks as well.
Kata ashi hishigi is a very common "ankle" lock or calf crushing technique that can be performed standing or on the deck (on your back/seated position) I have seen many variations of this simple hold (dislocation technique) in MMA.
Think of catching a kick with his foot trapped behind your armpit and lock your arms around it...
Picture might help here? (?)

Yes very good! Thanks again HB.
Leglock defense has been unnecessary in many areas for a long time. With modern so called "No Holds Barred" fighting games this is no longer the case!
The best defense is a good offense HardBall. Think about some leg entanglement throws (Osoto Gari) the first leg throw is a perfect set up for Hiza hishige

This is a fundamental hold to be sure and no doubt you know you can apply your own leg lock to his leg from some positions?
It is good to know the tricks so as not to be caught by them, eh?

same here, i basically know three with variations. there's a place in town that mixes judo and sambo for randori, which is pretty much my dream school if i can ever get my schedule/finances straightened outOriginally posted by Hardball View PostIt's an area of weakness for me. I only know a couple of leg locks at most.
