How many of you are proficient in the Japanese language? (Or Mandarin Chinese, or any East Asian languages for that matter?)

I can get by on the trains and order food in Japanese (either learn that or starve!) but other than that, my Japanese is pretty poor. I can speak a fair bit, but don't have the experience to understand it when spoken to me.

I'm not taking a Japanese language class right now, so I'm trying to keep my skills from deteriorating too much by using LangLearner through their podcasts. Tools like this can be a great supplement to language learning, but there's nothing like an in-person tutor. Japanese and many more languages. I'm learning Languages with this tool it's very helpful and I hope it helps you.

I can speak, read and write Japanese, but have difficulty with anything printed before the war.

I understand more spoken Japanese than I can speak. Mostly learned it from watching subtitled anime.
