  • help on choosing a style

ive been in Shotokan Karate, Shaolin Kung fu, Wushu, and went to a MMA place but at these places i just felt like it was boring and not very interesting, i want to pick up a style (other than these obviously) that is focused on strikes and throws really im a bit intrested in some styles of karate like Shorin-ryu and Shorei ryu (which is not in albuquerque -.-) if i had to pick a karate style is there one with a bit of high stances that is still focused on strong punches and kicks, throws, (right now im looking at going to a tang soo do/Hapkido place because well it looked intresting not sure if ill stay there though). I`d like to go to a place where they have sparring atleast so i can apply what ive learned (rather then hit a bag) and spar against a fully resisting opponet so i could get the feel for it. so can any one help me in choosing a place here in Albuquerque?

my advice would be to check out everything that is around you. then find what best suits your needs. with the tsd and hkd there are alot of joint locks and there will be alot of sparring only dont expect many hand techniques.

ty tenzen, but one question do you know a style of karate in my town that is kind of fluid, and not to deep stances that teaches punches, kicks the blocks, and some throws and take downs? maybe not both throws or takedowns but atleast some kind of thing like that i know theres a Shotokan karate place, shorin-ryu karate place but thats all i know of so far never tried Shorin-ryu so i think i willbut i want to know of some other styles that they teach here but i cant really find many but shotokan styles

well the thing is shotokan is probably the largest style of karate, i mean what we know of as karate is shotokan or one of its off shoots. aside from goju of course. i would look for goju if i was you. it seems like that is what you are looking for judging by your posts. it will cover all of those aspects you are looking for. also you should look into the japanese styles of jujutsu as they are striking arts contrary to what most believe. well some of them are. i will get back to you in a bit on whats in your area.

there is alot to choose from in your area. the most rounded as far as i can tell from the net would be the lion martial arts school. they have thai boxing, bjj, and wing chun. these work fairly well together. also there is a shuri te school you might want to look into, but this might wind up being a shotokan school. good luck. hope this helps you out.

Judging by your post, it doesn't sound like you're committed to anything.
