Is makiwara necessary? effective? must have one or not?

    thanx...

Not necessary, potentially harmful, but can be effective.

    Stick to bags and pads.

Maybe I'm confused about what Makiwara is, but in my old Kempo school, we did what we called makiwara drills where we would essentially do hard forearm to forearm strike routines to toughen our arms. We also did elbow to elbow, palm/backhand slaps, knuckle hits, and palm strikes to forearms. Is this what you all refer to as Makiwara?

hard type striking surface attatched to a pole or wall. some are softer than others, some are just canvas over a piece of wood.

2 planks, attached at the bottom with a widge inbetween so they are appart at the top, this will give it a spring effect

also poole wound in rope (hemp rope)

From what little I understand 'makiwara' simply means something akin to 'durable targets'.

Mounted targets, hanging bags, focus mitts etc are all different forms of makiwara.

We have numerous makiwara targets and it is good to train with. However, this whole shin/forearm/callous conditioning is contrary to our philosophy.

But then again, I could be wrong.

because it showed the power of a Karateka to be able to defend themself from a stationary cloth covered piece of wood, silly!

Sorry, I know, pot calling the kettle black...
