    Untraditional or Unusual Weapons? By Shinobi Teikiatsu - 12-27-2008 01:41 PM

    =========

    I hope this title doesn't offend anyone, but I was wondering who here has used untraditional (or weapons that aren't normally found in ninja arsenal) for training.

    My class has started holding workshops on warhammers (War mallets, more like), and it's been pretty interesting, but I can't help but wonder how one would go about carrying one of those things around. It's good training, but some of the better techniques I learned were sword vs. warhammer (since the sword seems to be one of my better weapons)

    Lately I've really wanted to learn how to use the tonfa and incorporate it into my taijutsu (I'm not entirely sure if we use tonfa in training, either we simply don't, or no one has a pair so sensei doesn't think it would be useful to teach)

    So, my friends, I ask you, have you ever trained with any untraditional or unusual weapons? What were the pros and cons of training with weapons other than the sword, staff, rope etc etc.

    Hi bud. Essentially the weapons you train with do not matter really, it is quite un likely that when it kicks off you posses a three foot rasor blade, a number of shuriken, a six foot staff or any other of the traditional weapons, its important to know however the principles of these tools as then you can use what you know and apply it to something similar in length, make up ect that is why we train with them, so we learn the principles.

    If your taijutsu is good your weapons work will be good, however if your basics and fundamentals are rubbish then so will your ability to use weapons. You dont use weapons your Taijutsu does it for you, its all the same essentially =D

    The great thing about Taijutsu is that once you reach a certain level of ability you will be able to use weapons that you have never used before as you know the principles of the weapon you are holding ie what you can do with it due to what it is weather it be long or short, sharp or dull, rigid or flexible.

    To answer your question though yes we train in unconventional weapons all the time, keys, lighters, umbrellas, hats, tables, chairs anything we have to hand or what 'gets in the way' eg you are sitting down at a table and someone trys to punch you, you can use the table to assist you into getting into a better position or just kick it into him lol

    As far as im aware though war ax, and war hammer are [art of the traditional training in the Bujinkan, its just not widlley taught these days.
