The following is a blog I wrote on recognizing and protecting yourself from BS artists in the martial arts. It applies to all arts, but in my experience you are more likely to find a fraud passing himself off as a ninjutsu master than any other style.

One key point is to be wary of people that have claims that seem too good to be true, like being part of the CIA, elite military, secret cage matches champions and a teacher that taught them from age 7 in secret.
Another is to just concentrate on what the person says happened to themselves. I can understand if you can't back up the claims of your teacher. You were not there when he was first learning. But you were there when you were learning, so you should be able to prove that you had training.
If you remember these simple points, you will avoid 99 percent of the BS artists out there.
