Dude, TB...no head-butts or chokes? How lame! You've gotta move over here to America. Just recently a few cops beat some 350 lb ogre--who was on crack and pcp--until he had a heart attack. I'm sure they'll get in no trouble at all; they shouldn't anyways. I hate those damn crack-heads

Just think about it, you could roll around with a .45 on your side and a 12 guage in the center console of your car. Talk about a great setup, huh? Beat crack-heads, carry guns, maybe shoot someone one day? That's a cop's life!

I think you'd like it here

Yeah man you should come here. The cops in my area seem to just have fun beating people with night sticks. Who needs self defense training when you have an extendable, a night stick, pepper spray, a pistol and a partner. Not to mention all the backup you want.

So why learn anything when you have multiple officers to beat people into comas. And then to get off with it, thats always a great feeling.

I know one day I hope to be a dick with some authority.

The current SOP for non-lethal force for non-compliance in most US police agencies is the use of pepper spray and/or baton (stressing no strikes to head). Some are also using non-lethal electrical devices such as the Taser in conjunction with the above. All of these methods are less effective against people on drugs such as PCP and others. The choke hold has been eliminated because of too many improper holds applied for to long a duration or crushed windpipes.

However, in many cases the non-compliant/drug induced subject has been killed from internal injuries resulting from multiple blows to the body and some to the head from batons. Most of the deaths are from the head blows with the baton.

Ultimately, the choke hold has proven to be the most effective method for gaining control of a non-compliant subject. Even a subject on PCP cannot override the restriction of blood flow to the brain that causes the black out. It's a shame that the police loose effective methods for less effective ones. And, as the post above indicates, the uninformed public believes that these less effective methods are what police would prefer. That is clearly not the case.

As I stated above I was referring to the cops in my area. I live in canada, so I wouldnt know what it is like in europe or anywhere else.

A lot of the cops seem to enjoy beating people. I mean I dont know this for a fact but they sure seem to beat the person pretty good when they "need" to. I mean three or tfour full on hits with an extendable to someones legs and body will most likely have them pretty complient. I know I would be. They dont need to hit them 30 times. Its just a bit overkill.

And yes I know that in our society we need police officers and that many of them are doing it for my safety as well as the rest of us. But there are many cops that just like to be dicks and hurt people. I just think there should be a better screening process for this sort of thing.

well, most police officers i know are very good men and women. Doing their job well, not being to nice and kind, not being to violent and harsh. (europe)

in my work i think that the extendable is a nice tool..

Overkill? I don't know. Is 100 times overkill when the subject still doesn't comply and is combative to the point that you still can't cuff him? Four times might work for you, but not for you on PCP or crack. There are way too many variables to consider to just say that a guy should only be hit X number of times. But, as I said before, the choke was the best tool LEO's once had. Bring that back and you will see far fewer "King" type videos. By the way, the officers in the King video were found innocent because they followed department policy. Beyond that, had the video just shown King being choked out, there wouldn't have been any riots over it and most likely no video would have ever been shown. Chokes aren't sensational enough for the 11:00 news.

I see what you mean. If you strike a guy over the head 10 times with a billy club it will look more sensational than if you land a guillotine or a neck crank while rolling around on the ground.

Esentially yes! But, in many cases you don't even have to go to the ground. It doesn't take most "untrained" people very long to understand how to do a rear naked choke standing. Add the element of the swarm on a subject, or even less with just a few cops, and the choke could be applied.

I realize what is sensational can be subjective. The average news room editor will most likely have no clue or appreciation for a choke hold. Nor, would he see a point in showing it to the public. Think of it this way, a cop comes up behind a combative subject puts him in a choke hold and with in 10 seconds the guy is limp. Not much to look at. However, a video with the cops beating on a guy or hitting him over the head a bunch of times will always get air time.

                            Shadowkiller,

I too live in Canada. Specifically what instances are you citing...or are you simply spouting rhetoric? Since as you stated "you don't know this for a fact" then what are you speaking about?

My dad used to have a sign up on our wall when I was growing up, it said "Before you shoot your mouth off, make sure your brains are loaded."

Well heres an instance that happened about a month ago. I was at a squat in toronto for the homeless.

Three cops beat a woman holding a baby untill she couldnt move. Then they took her baby and would not give it up to the father. Four cops jumped out of an unmarked car and held my buddy against the fence, would not give their badge numbers to him and then ripped all his buttons off and took away his flag. They then told him that if they saw him at the protest they would sharpen the flag and say he was going to use it as a weapon.

Ok and heres another Otto Vass, he was mentally handicapped. He came out of a 7/11 and some cops asked for his id. They thought he was drunk and when they grabbed him he tried to run. He was crying this entire time, they hit him 52 times with night sticks and killed him. Is this not overkill?

But come on this is just comon sense. If I hit someone with an extendable in the back of the knees 4 times, he isnt getting up. Unless I have some sort of super metal legs like you must have.
