  • Is this sound self defense advice?

"When there are no avenues of escape or one is caught even before any attempt to escape can be made, then for the first time the use of self-defense techniques should be considered. Even at times like these, do not show any intention of attacking, but first let the attacker become careless. At that time attack him concentrating one's whole strength in one blow to a vital point and in the moment of surprise, escape and seek shelter and help."
    From Geoff Thompsons site.

That's the classic example of the sucker punch. Street thugs have used that technique very effectively for ages. You know, there may be other factors involved that may not make that the best option. But if you're in a secluded area with no onlookers/witnesses and are approached by someone you've never met who is intent on hurting you then I would say go for it.

Sounds good to me. But keep attacking until he's hit the deck.

I agree with everything except the one shot. You hit enough to create an avenue of escape, but rarely are you going to do what you need to do in one shot, even if it's to a vital point (all in theory of course).

Can you link to where you got the quote?

I am flexible about the "one shot" theory. I have, indeed, taken people out with one shot. And that was merely a Shukokai Karate punch. I can hit in a much more effective manner now.

I don't think you should RELY on one shot but, in the fence/pre-emptuive strike scenario, that should be your goal. You'll know straight away if it has worked and, if not, hit him again and again.

In short, do what needs to be done. Don't restrict yourself to preconcieved notions.

Here's the link to the page. Third paragraph from the top. What the person who is being quoted means is hit and run, not really end the fight with one strike. "...and in the moment of surprise, escape and seek shelter and help."

But that's just one guest writer on the site. The way you introduced it looks as if you're saying that it is a quote from GT himself.

Not at all TB, I just said "From Geoff Thompsons site." Never hinted that Geoff said it. The quote is from GF. Your statement, "Don't restrict yourself to preconcieved notions" would seem to apply here .

It may have been more accurate to name the person who said it, rather than the person who didn't.

So poo poo of, wee wee knickers!

Surely you saw the humour in my last sentence..........

I don't know. Martial Arts really must be bad for the brain.

This is what we call strategy. This strategy is sound but you can never totally rely one punch. After your first punch keep punching driving the bad guy back and until he is no longer a threat. If he tries to grab on clinch him and throw knees.

For legal sake (if there are witnesses) say something like “I don’t want to fight you” It will be better for you if you have to go to court.

If you have to fight that is all other options have failed (avoidance escape, verbal de-escalation, etc) then go on the offensive fight furiously don’t get fancy but go all out. It’s kind of like a gun fight the first one to get the gun drawn and fired accurately is the winner. This means when possible hit first, hit often, hit last, and hit F***’n hard!

I think this is a good general strategy but there may be better more specific strategies and tactics that may suit your physical and mental abilities and your personal fighting style. Don’t get caught up in there is only one way to do it.

Also keep in mind there are different strategies for different situations such as someone larger and stronger, multiple attackers, and someone with a weapon like a knife.

I think the best thing to do is work with what you do best and natural neuromuscular reactions. Examples- would be when someone grabs your nads you instinctually reach down to cover them, or someone pokes you in the eye you raise your hands close your eyes and turn the head, when someone tries to choke you, your hands automatically reach for your throat to protect it. These are instinctual no one had to train you to do it; this makes a good basis to start developing good techniques from.

Also using your strengths- I am not a great kicker but I can teep (push kick) very well, I also have a very powerful front thrust kick and a wickedly powerful round kick. So these are pretty much the only kicks I’ll use in a real fight. I will kick groin, knees, and abdomen but I won’t kick any higher than that. But if you happen to an excellent kicker you might kick more in a real fight. I am also great at the clinch and will use it then bang my opponent with my knees. I also have very fast hands so I’ll punch a lot, I am a large guy so I don’t move fast so I’ll usually come right at the person. These tactics work well for me so this is what I use in a real fight. You may need different tactics that suit you better.

Never let someone threatening into your personal zone. This means if you can reach out and touch them then they can punch or grab you. Place your hands up but not in a fighting stance or in a threatening way. Use foot work to keep them form entering you zone (step to the side or at angles) If they persist on entering your zone let em’ have it!

If they have already postured and threatend and move into your zone then don't mess with what I just said in the above paragraph just let them eat a right cross!

Yeah darianations right. There will be a lot of variations though,Ive had situations where ive walked around a corner and then they are right in front of me.A lot of time ive found that you have to frighten them.Ill raise my voice and just rush them once they see that your not affraid use it.
