You'd better be training in an "alive" setting. I'd have my basic postions from the ground down. Training Vale Tudo using half guard is very helpful (Like Mino). Make sure you move your head while on your back, you hips better be flexible enough to allow you to use an open guard. Practice kicking while on the ground. (I know that WT anti grappling will prevent you from being taken to the ground), but as a screen name intones, I am a WC man myself. I haven't trained it for six years, but my functional JKD is much better than my WC ever was. I can stand with boxers/kickboxers, and I can grapple with BJJ guys. I couldn't previously, and until you have the kind of confidence to stand and trade with the previously mentioned fighters, or fight from the ground, I would seriously reconsider.

I think these are more like a fight club sort of thing, but then again you never know what kind of skill the other person could have. I do know that there are no rules unlike the roof top match from the link. I definetly want to go and check out the manner and the atmosphere. Im sure they don't continue to let you beat on the person untill there dead............I think.

Dude, you obviously have never gotten your ass kicked before.

I don't mean being beat during sparring, I mean you are choking and immobile with the pain and a dude kicking your ribs while you're curled up in a fetal position on the ground such that you can't even feel his boots pounding against your numb skull anymore assbeat. Go get your ass kicked, and THEN decide if you want to go into these kinds of NHB sports

I think that many martial artist disgard a VERY important fighting quality: Aggresive quality (this means everything from initiative to willpower to bloodlust to the willingness to actually kill someone) for actual combative effectiveness. Now I am not a aggressive guy, and I sure hope you aren't because most of those aggresive types are criminals, but some of them might just be fighting at this underground competition!

i think most people disregard that a calm collected individual with real skill is far more able than aggression.

If you want to do it i would go for it, you know the chances of getting badly hurt are good and if that doesn't scare you then do it. What's holding you back? Fear?

I agree with nearly everyone that has posted on this topic BUT if you aren't afraid of getting hurt then there's nothing holding you back.

Dude, whoa, slow down here, don't go into a fight like that without knowing what real pain feels like, and what the fights are really like. You get hit with a blow that really friggin' hurts, your entire body goes into some serious shock. and believe me, you get hit and aren't used to it, it HURTS!!! What if your opponent has a hard as hell fist and blows you one right through the jaw. First off, there's a nerve in the jaw that you can seriously injure if you mess up the jaw badly. And also, the face is soft in general. Or if you get kicked hard in the leg or hamstring, and it spasms, you can go down.

As for a calm collective quality in fighting, from what I have seen, if you are not aggressive, you will not win. You must be aggressive but controlling of yourself. Like you don't come ut all wild and nuts, you come out to control the fight, but then like Cung Le says, if your opponent is defending you put the heat to them. Calmness you must have so that your muscles don't wear out fast; calmness is also good for fighting off a wild and nutty attacker. Remember, aggressive doesn't mean nutcase-fighter.

But yeah, if you could seriously get you ass beat in a fight like this if you lose, be careful. you don't want to end up with a detached retina, or a broken jaw, or a busted knee, or hell even a broken fist if you punch the guy in the skull by accident. Be careful.

I dunno how "real" those fights you talk about are, but remember one thing: the gladiators of Rome and the Pankration fighters, who fought totally no rules-style fighting, and they did it naked by the way!! (sucked to be hit in the groin then) often were unrecognizeable to their friends and families after some years.

I was being sarcastic about WT anti-grappling. I saw Emin's anti grappling in his fight with William Cheung. No attempt to pass, no bettering of position and no strikes from a dominant position. (again, satire)

Just found this forum while doing research for a short story character I'm writing. How do you get into this 'underground' world of fighting? Is it through an undercurrent of the local M.A. organizations or what? Do you hang out on the docks and wait to be approached, are you approached at sanctioned tournys? How would my character get into this sort of activity? Any vauge reply is welcome just so that I can write him with at least a bit of info under my belt. I've been training in Kung Fu for a year now and as far as Nogard is concerned a year is nothing. I also hope that his name 'Nogard' is not a reflection of his defense capabilities when fighting.

It depends. Try getting in touch with people that have done them. Jason Delucia the guy that got armbarred by Royce did these type of matches in Chinatown. A lot of people run fight clubs. There is Gong Sao in China.

Go For It!!!!!! Forget The Other Guys Words

Don't worry bout their wordz. Jus remember, attack the cure hit thats closest to you WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST HESITATION!! NO RULES!!! EVERY PART OF YOUR BODY, USE IT AS A WEAPON(WITH COMMON SENSE, Dont' Pea on Anyone, or you'll get beat by everyone) ALSO, attack through the opponent, try to punch holes through them, Kick chuck out of them, but be quick and rapid. Keep your Guard hand up to protect your face, and use the Right Lead with Broken Rhythm. Destroy the opponents center line, don't telegraph, and keep on a blank face, even b4 the match, jus stare at them without fear. It boost your confidence and give you da confident cos they'll be wonderin what you goin to do. Oh if you do get on the ground, use your teeth(no rules) Those are Basic rules, That every Martial Artist should know, especially Jeet Kune Do Artist. I've Been Doin this art since i lost my first fight. Soon to be 5 years ago this November,27. Oh almost forgot, if you cant go on, get out the ring before you get seriously hurt, or jus walk away. Better to lose and live to fight another day.
