  • How far is to far

How far would you drive to learn at a good school? In my case it about 45 miles or 1 hour 15 min drive with the traffic. Its the only JKD class around.

BTW- this school is taught by a guy certified under Guru Dan Inosanto. If that makes any differance.

How badly do you want to learn?

I'm not being facetious, I'd drive an hour for an exceptional Muay Thai instuctor. Heck, some people drive an hour just to go to work.

My instructor used to drive two hours to train under Tuhan Gaje.

Yeah. But at the same time, check the class out first. Even try it. You may not like it or the instructor might not be great (even if he is under Inosanto). Also, the instructor might not even instruct. You might be driving an hour each way to get some junior instructor. Maybe there are better schools in your area that aren't JKD but are better quality instruction. Also, remember that driving that far takes a lot of commitment. It's hard enough to drag myself to a regular class sometimes, let alone one that is an hour away. Keep in mind that you don't want to quit just over distance.

Just open your mind to another art and shop around. You can always get some good basics at a school that is close and round it out with some JKD videos. Also, Gary Dill has a distance training JKD program that might work for you. Tons of people have video courses that won't help you get rank but are still valuable: Vunak, Inosanto, Poteet, Dill, Thornton, Richardson etc. etc. etc.
