The point is, "neutralizing" grappling is merely the striker's fantasy if they don't actually learn grappling.

Peter point-sparring stops Kenny Karate from finishing a horrible double once a week and thinks he's got it all figured out.

How many times do I have to type this. There are plenty of world class MMA strikers who aren't good grapplers, but who beat grapplers all the time. They learn "enough", but they aren't going to win Abu Dhabi anytime soon.

Your example is weak because we're not talking about strip mall dojo guys. We were originally talking about MMA training. A MMA fighter like the guy who started this thread should be practicing sprawls and other takedown defenses all the time. But he doesn't have to spend his time becoming the next Gracie.

Who are greatly outnumbered by those strikers who lose precisely because of stupid advice like yours.

Look, 5 years ago, you were right. But now, grappling has been so overexposed, it isn't catching people off guard anymore. I couldn't care less about training for MMA, so I don't really care which side of the fence you are on Jubaji. I've done over 2 and a half years of BJJ 4 days a week, so I know about grappling. I enjoy it. But honestly, for street self defense you only need about 6 months. For MMA you don't need to be a strong grappler. With rounds, time limits etc., you can learn a bare minimum to survive. We are going in circles so I'm going to drop it from my end. Good luck in expressing yourself.

            Good luck in fantasy land.

Silva is either a brown or black belt in BJJ, the entire Chute Box team trains BJJ and has for many years now. Cro Cop may not be a top notch grappler but he TRAINS with them. Look at the top HW and LHW fighters right now.

              Fedor - Judo/Sambo
              Nog - BJJ/Judo
              Mir - BJJ
              Cro Cop - Sprawl only
              Herring - Wrestling
              Barnett - Wrestling/Pankration

              Rampage - Wrestling/MMA
              Belfort - BJJ
              Silva - BJJ
              Lidell - Wrestling

Even guys like Silva and Lidell who are known as strikers have a background in grappling. You need to know how to grapple to win, it's just that simple. Noone is saying you don't need to know how to strike, but it's easier to take a punch and keep going, than to get up after a good grappler slams you down on the canvas and takes the mount.

Tyler Durden has just double-legged the correct, dominated position and easily submitted cuz the correct only knew just enough grappling to survive.

                          I like to shadow grapple.....

I will lie down on my back, in the invisible guard.
