      jkd

      hey calima

I just moved to SF and have only been able to find a couple of jkd schools.....I haven't visited any yet, I probably going to start training at Fairtex instead. Here is the address of one of the schools, its not PFS but may be worth a look. Here are a couple of other addresses that might be of interest

        I've been waiting for you.

Modern Combatives uses Straight Blast system for instruction/execution. As far as progressive, I am assuming that you are referring to the jkd that incorporates current styles and strategies into their training?

I am not sure what they do there. You should call and ask for specifics.

But didn't Bruce Lee start leaning towards Western Boxing. I also heard that he was very interested in Muay Thai before he died?

I have been taking Muay Thai at http://www.pacifickickboxing.com and really happy. I took JKD many years ago and it was good too. I like the Muay Thai because it seems more of a sport where you train hard, condition, and have tons of opportunities to compete. I plan on adding BJJ to the mix when I am a little better at Muay Thai.

A lot of JKD places seem to use Muay Thai (and western boxing) in some fashion or another.

I know most people are always trying to find "the best" this or that or looking for the one style that is gonna make them the supreme bad-ass. But what are the reasons that you are being so specific about the place you train? What are your goals? What are you basing your decisions (for seeking a specific JKD style) on?

the reason is cus im tryin to learn a art which is street oriented. im sure you can learn any art and be able to use it on the street but im tryin to find one where its more towards street than the sport. and in my opinion.. jkd or Rat or pfs, wing chun is best for street. and also its cus im taking jkd as of rite now and i like the style and jus dont wanna change my background since jkd was the first and only art i learned. my bro and my good frens take muay thai tho.. and they love it..

Well, I think moderncombatives would be for you then. They use the princples outlined in the following:

As far as having street use, you should watch the first 5 or 8 UFCs and you will whitness the evolution of MMA first-hand. You will see martial arts styles getting completely destroyed. You will also note that boxing, muay thai, and bjj are the dominating styles (all of which are sport related).

I would also suggest you watch as many streetfight videos as you can. Look at Ghetto Brawls and clips from fightauthority.com.

I suggest, no matter what style you use, that you train against as many different fighters as possible (especially street fighter types). Many street fights are just an aggressive barrage of overhand, wide hooks, and uppercut punches. Then it usually hits the ground. I have been in numerous fights and can tell you that trying to block punches is of little use. Your best bet is to learn how to bob/weave - slip/slide and have excellent footwork.

Anyhow, hope you find a good school and let us know where you end up going.
