  • Double-ended speed bag

Might buy a double-ended speed bag soon...and never used one. I just believe speed and coordination is important. Anyone have any advice? Any drills they like to do?
Oh, and any purchasing advice would be nice... u know, maybe a certain quality of the bag to avoid or look out for.

The double end ball is more for TIMING than speed. The platformed speed bag is better for speed. I've used both together for about 10 years and they are inseprable.

      first off

start out with a larger double end bag preferably leather(mine has lasted for years), I bought a mini-pro double end bag which is great for just punching, but is too fast for me to bob and weave under, strangely enough the very same bag at a gym, I had no problem with bobing and weaving on. Must be the way I'm mounting it. Don't get a bag that's to advanced or you'll never get a chance to improve your bobing and weaving skills. the speed bag is the best for timing but the speed bag platform on my heavy bag stand is a pice of crap, any bag I hang moves so slow, I could drink beer while I use it ,the whole platform vibrates every time I hit it.Dam I wish I had a speed bag. run a circut if you work out at home
x number of rounds shadow boxing with or without 2 pound dumbells (use a mirror if you have one to check your form)
x number of rounds hitting the double end bag
x number of rounds hitting the heavy bag
x number of rounds hitting the speed bag
x number of round hitting the punch mitts (if you have a training partner)
x number of rounds sparring (if you have a training partner)
do either 2 or 3 minuet rounds, you can use a digital oven timer (under ten dollars at any store) to time your rounds forget those expensive timers in the boxing cataloges. Basicaly you can go toe to toe with the bag(put your front foot close to where the bag is mounted on the floor) and work on bobing and weaving /slipping skills or you can move back a little and work on punching at different angles and movement(footwork) The double end bag will improve you reaction skills, so use it as part of every workout. You may want to consider a maize bag as well.

I got the century headache bags. I like them because they are little. I'm not sure if they are still available for purchase. I had the leather everlast model once and it worked well though not as durable and long lasting as the century headache bag. Speedbag platforms are easy to mount and sell for about 39.99. Get the adjustable model in case you want to share your gym with others.

          RedStreak,
A double-end bag and a speedbag are two different types of equipment. There are also the kickboxing bags (60#), the heavybags, and headache bags (along with many many others). All of the ones mentioned other than heavybags are pretty affordable. around $30 give or take. The best option is to have a large area and have all these bags, where you can move from one bag to another uninterrupted. However this isn't available to most people.

Personally I would start with a headache bag. Start with the bag at headlevel. When you start getting better tighten the bungees to increase the speed of the bag, use dumbells if you have to; just lean them over the bungee. You can get these bags moving pretty quick. Make sure you hit this bag at least 1000-2000 times 1-2 times a day. You will be able to hit 1000 times in about 10 minutes after you get good so its not too taxing on your time. Keep your guard up the whole time and pay very close attention to your form. Once you get really good, keep raising the headache bag higher and higher to increase difficulty.
you can practice all your basics on a headache bag.

After this, the next bag I would buy would be a very high quality heavy bag of at least 100#s. Heavybags are for increasing power. Once you have these and are working them all the time, you'll be able to get all the other toys one after another. Dont get more bags than you can hit.

            tip

I have a headache bag and it's too slow for punching but just right for kicking.
A double end bag that's filled would be a better choice if you want a double end bag that you can hit hard and have it snap back to you. But if it's power you want to practice, the heavy bag is really the way to go.The double end bag is for timing not power.

This probably just means that the cables could be tightened. What I do is tie the bottom bungee to a dumbell weight 20-30#, then I put a couple more dumbells over the cord to kind of pinch it and make it much tighter/quicker. Of course you have to make sure that it is really securely fastened to the ceiling, or you'll pull the top bungee right out.
The tighter you get those bungees, the faster the bag will move. The tension is really the only factor in the speed of the bag. But, yeah, a double-end will still move faster.

I changed all of the cords on my headache bags. I use those elastic cords; that they have in luggage departments. Also, I use multiple headache bags and set them at different heights. To me, they are not a subsitute for the speed bag but a nice change of pace/tempo. I use them to work on my timing; not speed.
