  • 'wing chun and iron palm'

im moving to Australia this October for two years, in order to learn Wing Chun, is it wise to read about and to try and learn some 'Iron Palm' techniques before i go?

Is 'Iron Palm' an actual martial art or is it just specific hand training?

Would Iron Palm help me during Wing chun?

    Cheers everyone

    Iron Palm

Iron palm is just what you thought it was. specific hand training but there is more to it than that. A lot of styles or systems train iron palm differently none are wrong just different. I would suggest getting hold of the people you are going to train with and get a head start on how they do it

Wing Chun Iron palm uses the formula method. I believe it's called Dit Ja Dow or something to that effect. Wait on your instructor. If you do it wrong, you can do some serious damage to your body. Also, I believe the Iron Palm training last over periods of months or even years. They aren't going to teach you that right off the bat. I'm not sure what the criterior is but wc is a complicated style and Iron Palm is reserved for it's advanced students.

The wc guys that I know are able to break coconuts with their palms once they have acquired Iron Palm. For me I have Iron Fist not iron palm.............I developed it over the years from using makiwaria boards and knowing pressure points negates the need for iron palm/iron fist. Some people use iron palm as a generic name for conditioned hands but wc iron palm stands out from the crowd.

Don't let this discourage you, just be yourself and see what happens.

Also, if you do a search here on defend.net there is a very good thread from last year about iron palm conditioning.

I bump the thread to the top for you. It's called hand conditioning part I and it is in the Chinese Martial Arts Forum. I believe you will find it very enjoyable and informative.
