    total contradiction

you do not train box patterns, dead drills, but you teach them? huh! you do not like kali in its total form, but you merit it in weapon vs weapon? you gave up training in jkd 8 years ago, but yet you were at a Vu '99 retreat.

so you don't like the "jkd approach" but yet you train in almost the same frame using the bits and pieces you learned from Vu., and yet it is not jkd?

i give, this whole thread sounds fishy ify.

Vu stated it the best, every one is now trying to compete for a very small piece of the pie, and the only way to acomplish this is by bashing this and that. everyones a salesman nowadays.
    best of luck to ya

"""you do not train box patterns, dead drills, but you teach them?"""

I will if the really want me too. It's their money. I always tell them that, in my opinion, it's a total waste of time. And I always try to steer people away from it. Really it's something I never have to teach because no one wants to learn it anymore. I've taught a version of the sumbrada pattern twice in the past 4 years.

"""you do not like kali in its total form, but you merit it in weapon vs weapon?"""

Even then I feel that the "artsy" parts of Kali need to be rejected. I don't value any given structure in it's totality. Absorb what is usefull...

"""so you don't like the "jkd approach" but yet you train in almost the same frame using the bits and pieces you learned from Vu., and yet it is not jkd?
      """

The proof is in the pudding... Vu hates what I do so how can it be from him... And I learned about 3, yes 3, usefull things from him. Others may have picked up, accepted, adopted more than I did. If you looked at my program their would not be enough evidence to convict me of ever knowing him. My program consists of firearms, OC Spray, empty hands vs knife, strike-clinch-ground and weapons.

""" every one is now trying to compete for a very small piece of the pie, and the only way to acomplish this is by bashing this and that. everyones a salesman nowadays."""

That's a funny statement. First of all I don't even advertise. I have a banner on mma.tv and that's it. I don't do the magazine ads or anything else. Yet I have more business than I can possibly handle. I have to turn down business all the time. I'm not scrambling in the slightest. It just comes to me. I do not solicit law enforcement training, they call me. I don't pay for the equipement we use in our DVDs, it's given to me. This "proverbial pie" is called "commerce" and it's life blood is competition. You cannot survive the competition unless you have something to offer. The pie and it's slices are what run this countrys economy. Everything from twinkies to automobiles are part of the pie. It's a good thing. It shouldn't be looked at as something strange or worrisome. In the future there will be even more people doing some version of what we do. That will be great! Just like in all things the differences in brand, style and/or personality will be obvious.

"""you gave up training in jkd 8 years ago, but yet you were at a Vu '99 retreat."""

We all make mistakes. It was a mistake for me to attend that year. And I abandoned JKD as my calling card, as my framework. I now have Self Preservation training. You will see JKD in Self Preservation training but you will not see Self Preservation training in JKD.

It's unfortunate that some see me as putting down some to make myself look better. I simply talk about the things which I think are functional, or not. I am most definatly opposed to tradition and the cult of personality. I dunno nothin... But... If a person is really concerned with the in herent responsibility to protect himself and his family that person would be training and evaluating and discussing outcomes, and that's what I do.

Why not? Why couldn't it be brought in and assimilated into the JKD curriculum? After all, that sounds like what you've done.
Don't get me wrong, I have respect for what you do...but I think respect is due to the whole JKD family too.

"""Why not? Why couldn't it be brought in and assimilated into the JKD curriculum?"""

No. This is because the "high probability tactics" of self preservation training would force many JKD programs to drop a number of techniques and training methods. Self Preservation training is a set of "core tactics" that are blended together. Entire arts are never taught. So what is "known as JKD" would not look exactly the same anymore. Hence, Self Preservation training.

There is no lack of respect to the "whole JKD family" (if one even exsists with all the infighting and sub cultures). I just talk about my training and my findings and it upsets some people. The attitude I have when I find myself listening to someone I dissagree with is to stop listening to that person, not argue with them. If they really believe what they are saying, after research and development, they should be immovable. I know that, so I would not try to move them. I may voice my dissagreement but I won't argue.

It is supposed to change. Hasn't it changed? What happened to absorb-discard?

            They should never be "immovable"!
This creates stagnation, and things will always come along that are better...science, baby...check it...nothing is ever a proven fact, there are only provisionally accepted laws and theories, but we learn more everyday...there is nothing wrong with skepticism...but over confidence and too much pride precipitate inflexibility...which is a bad thing.

No offense Demi, but if I had something I "didn't want to teach to someone" I would not advertise it bright as day on the first page of my website!

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not too concerned about it because that's the way it is.

Demi, its too bad you don't have a studio in the DC/Metro area. For starters I'd love to train with you guys. Second of all, with all the federal agencies here, there an infinite amount of work that'd be up your alley (an IMO is something worth thinking about). Incidentally, I've worked with various SF units during my 8 years in the AF. You'd be amazed at how similar your philosophies coincide with what I've picked up over the years. Having a core built around what you'll most likely run into is the first step to being prepared for reality. Being adaptable is fine and all, but having that bread and butter well trained is where it should be at.
