Hey everyone. I had my first lesson yesterday and man, it was awesome!

The first thing I have to say is that Sifu Chris Moran is an excellent instructor. Met up with him in the park and he spoke to me about the concept of the system. What he told me was that self defense is a concept of first learning defense. Then he showed me a stance that enabled me to protect myself by using my elbows and knees as a defense mechanism in destroying an opponent's punch or kick. I didn't think it would work until I my punch met his elbow. OUCH!!!

We did a little light sparring and that was when I discovered how old and out of shape I am (39 yr old vs. 25 yr old. No contest there).

I think what really blew me away was when we added some sparring with the use of the training knife. What he told me was that defense against a punch and a kick should be viewed the same as defense against a knife. The concept of footwork and just staying out of the range of attack is very important in fighting (by the way, did I tell you that this is when I discovered I was out of shape? I did? Oh).

What seemed like a lot was not so much in technique, but in the very concept of self defense. I guess that's why I have a case of insomnia and decided to write about my experience.

Welcome to the world of martial arts!

One less person to refer to the arts like as ineffective chop-sockey crap and one more person whose seen it for themselves first hand.
