Hi. My name is Keith Davis. I live in Corinth Ms. There are no instructors here and with raising 3 kids by myself i cannot commute a long distance to a class. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions on which dvd course to go with and possibly if there were any practitioners in my area who need a sparring partner?

I am 40 yrs old, i am overweight at this time. That is why i wish to do this in the first place. I took a local Tae Kwon Do class for app. 5 yrs. I also went briefly to florence Al. to "Realistic Fighting Techniques." To far to drive and hold full time 12 hr a day job at that time. Now i wish to lose weight get in better shape. I have not smoked a cigarette in 9 months. I have been doing some stretching from my TKD days to loosen up but not as much as i would like. The kids are young and somewhat demanding.I have a 6 yr old stepson and 3 yr old twins.

Mom was diagnosed as bi-polar and borderline personality and has abandoned us in favor of anybody, anytime. I have been working 8 hr days 6 days a week. I am a big guy and can take care of myself. I am not completely soft. I have been working in a warehouse for 10 months with no air conditioning.(Started in july of 06) 6' 1" 270 lbs. Even at my lowset weight of 198 lbs i still had a 50 inch chest and 17 inch biceps. Trying to look better, feel better, and learn something at the same time.

have you considered joining a boxing gym? boxing gyms are usually pretty easy to find and inexpensive to join. i think even police departments and ymca offer boxing to the public.

Well i am not a big fan of boxing. I have more experience with martial arts and i guess i just like it better. Nothing against boxing though. Just not my thing.

Based on your description of things, I would dis recommend TKD and suggest something like Jujitsu or Judo. Best of luck and keep posting here.

              work on your fitness first!

you set your own schedule, there is minimal cost and you learn how to motivate yourself and be disciplined!

if you feel confident you can handle yourself on the street that's cool, realistically the biggest killers in the western world are heart disease and cancer due to being overweight and unfit.

being fit should be your priority! its the ultimate self defence in terms of the benefits it gives to you everyday in every area of your life.

why train self defence for years for something that may never happen and if it does will probably only be a scrap due to an ego clash.

              being fit 'defends' you everyday

just my thoughts, take it or leave it

if I were you i'd buy a heavy bag nad buy a mma striking or boxing instructional dvd also look into grappleing or mma schools in your area.
For fitness a home boxing work out or home ma workout on a bag is great.
