The grappling arts imply most fights end up on the ground. The striking arts imply all fights start standing up. The clinching arts imply the clinch can stop the striker from striking, and the grappler from taking it to the ground. The weapon arts imply the they can stop the unarmed man. A complete martial art implies any fight can go anywhere...be ready and able to go everywhere.

The book is a black and white spiral bound book with demonstrations of the the different guntings, and hand tools for empty hand Kali.
It discusses the different routes from the various guntings and defensive tools and then goes into drills to increase your attributes training such as a boxing form of Numerado, Sumbrada and Hubud. There are a lot of pictures and illustrations.
I liked the book and it has a lot of good basic and intermediate information, but if you are used to high end book production you won't get it here. The book is more of a Kinko's (Copy company in our area) college spiral bound notebook. One problem a person may also have is some of the information or information line on a technique may begin the last line on the page and then the picture demonstration or explanation will be at the top of the next page.
Bottom line. I loved the book and think it is a very good reference/ information source which lays a thorough foundation for Panantukan. It does not tell it all, but it is good. I had hedged on buying this for quite a while and then I saw it at a Guro Inosanto seminar in St. Louis(I was looking over his shoulder when he was showing it to someone else). He was giving it a positive review to the person and pointed out all of its good points (but I have never heard him say anything bad about anyone at any seminars I have attended).

Rick's book
hello guys,
I have a copy of Rick's book and i love it. yes it does have some copy problems as with any small publishing ( i believe he is test marketing it for large scale publishing).
it coves alot of information and is a good source of reference for those already versed in this area and a great guide for those just beginning.
As for Rick himself, well, Rick was one of the first people outside of the Inosanto Academy to recieve certification from Guro. I've never met him but friends who have say you can't tell if he's left handed or right handed no matter what he's doing, even sumbradas etc. he switches without people noticing! I know that those first few people out there who fought for certification and legitamcy had a tough road, and for that he deserves respect, that he's a full instructor under Guro also demands respect, that his Minnesota Kali Group have turned out excellent students and instructors is the final say. In my opinon, Rick Faye is a talented and respected martial artist and his book is definately a must have for JKD/filipino martial artist.

Do it NthMan
It's a 45 minute drive for me and as far as I'm concerned, 3x/week is worth it. If you're only 15 min away and you're at all interested, the LEAST you should do is give it a week (free) and talk with the man.
You should note that they have moved (this past weekend). The new location, maybe the one you were refering to, is on the web site http://www.mnkali.com/
I should also mention that I am pretty new to martial arts, but before joining the Kali Group I did my homework and checked out a number of other places in the area. Rick impressed me. His attitude and his abilities as a teacher even more than his fighting abilities, which is saying a lot.
Hope to see you there!
Mike

Hmm, I have been thinking about it for awhile. What are you studying with him currently? I read one of their brochures once and I couldn't decide what would be the most useful class to be in. He sounds like a straight up guy as well as a good teacher. I have been studying TKD 4 days/week for about 1.5 years now and I feel like I put a lot into it but I don't get as much back or something I don't know.....if I took classes there would Rick always be teaching them or would he be there 1x per week and then have assistants the rest of the week?
Thanks for the info!

I train with a guy in KC who trained with Rick Faye for 3 years before he moved and he has always bragged about the assistant instructors and how well they blend the ranges and styles. Additionally he says all of Mr. Fayes instructors are high quality so you can't go wrong.
We have been discussing going to Mn. to train at a couple of his sponsored seminars and try to get some private lessons in.

What are his videos like? Are they similar to Dan Inosanto's? Eric Paulson? Bill McGrath? How are his Sunday seminar tapes?

Nth man, your best bet is go to the phase 1 classes in the evenings on tues, thurs at 6:00 and sat morning at 10:00. Rick teaches all of these personally if you find that important, but do not underestimate Diane if she is teaching the class. The phase one class teaches basic stick work and muy thai regularly with panantukan and old school jkd mixed in. If you attend the class long enough he does introductions to every art he teaches.
Chad, did you get one of the original books with poor picture quality? If you did you may want to e-mail them to see if they will let you exchange it for one of the second edition ones(ask if they corrected the mistakes that people have noticed, this is the first I've heard of this).

hekster
I haven't ordered the book yet. I suppose the material would be all new to me, I've never had any exposure to Inosanto's method, etc. We here in Hawaii are seminar deprived. I'm interested in the subject of panantukan, and have only exposure to what I've learned from my instructor. My interest in panantukan is in using it against the way people box/kickbox/vale tudo strike today.
Take Care,

Chad, alot of the initial material in panantukan is covered in boxing if you did both leads(. First major differences is the jabbing backhand to the cross or vice versa and guntings).
The portion that you should be interested in is the head/body control. Some of it is like silat in that you try to rotate their torso in the opposite direction of their legs. Other times you just push on their face to get the backwards motion like the straight blast. What I thought was really different was the forearm swipe across the head so that your forearm passes through the head and then combo to the head push changing their direction followed by strikes.(It would be very confusing to be on the receiving end).
These are just individual techniques that can be found in many places, Rick's forte is linking these in a series to engrain them into the nervous system. He makes the series as a static form first and then gives options. As the option set gets bigger he introduces a limited random set that requires reading of motion amoung a handful of techniques with the idea that eventually you could feed and counter randomly without sparring. You probably recognize this from stickwork.
