What is your favorite "active" strategy for defense?
I'd say my favorite defense is offense. Whether it's an interception or just keeping pressure on the guy with strikes of my own. I've found the best way to foil an opponents offense is to smother it with faster, smarter attacks of my own. I never let the other guy get to the point where he can really hurt me. But it depends on how good your opponent is. If he's really good I might switch to destructions and counter-fighting.
I would imagine that it depends on the situation. If we square off, then I would (fake and) attack, because I like putting pressure on my opponent. However, it is interesting that the question is posed in a manner like this-it is usually a luxury to feel/see an attack coming. If we all were prepared and knew an attack was coming, then we could plan. In FMA, we try our best to develop reflex, so hopefully, if I trap, it comes naturally-the same would be true if I use a destruction technique or simple evasion. Also, what is the environment? Maybe I can't evade, and must destruct.
Isn't the best defense really what you do naturally for an unplanned attack? If you survive, then you know it's a good technique...
I have also found it quite useful to "squeal like a little girl" while you are running away with arms flailing. NOBODY wants to mess with you after that....

Good one! I like to pee my pants- no one really wants to fight a 250 pound guy soaked in urine.
Seriously, my favorite active defense would be trapping. Of course, this isn't always possible, so in actuality, I say evasion works best.
