We used to do running around the park during winter, and at my old TKD dojan we used to do demos like all the time, so it was pretty ordinary.

In parks, on tv, in bj's wholesale club, parking lots, schools...

I train in my yard all the time.

We had a couple of weeks worth of outdoor training in a parking lot while our usual venue (communtity centre) was being renovated. We had some strange looks from the locals, and a couple of idiot on-lookers who got a little too excited when we sparred. But we ignored them. We were sharing the field with a Pekiti-Tirsia club so they provided a bit of distraction.

I train on the beach a lot here. The Japanese are used to it so I never get more than a couple of interested glances.

Sounds great! When I was training in Singapore we would often train on the beach (Sentosa or Pulau Ubin) - Kali or grappling. Grappling in the sand is interesting.

Where I started out in Karate we used to go running for warm-up, bare-foot, down the streets of a major city - with ice an snow in the streets. Every 15 seconds with kiai.

The dojo did not need to do any advertising at that time to get new members.

                            Cool

                            Really?

Wow that funny, Ive never heard of anyone doing that. Thats a great way to get some exercise but it would have been a better advertisment.

                              Well...

Well, I must admit, it did seem a bit exotic to some people - but the initiator of this kind of exercise was a certain Sensei Fujita who had just arrived from Japan as a guest sensei for 12 Months. I happened to join the dojo (my first dojo) the same week he arrived - so even though it was a bit exotic I never knew it any different.

Many people in the area did not even know there was a dojo - and dropped in to se what was going on. Some stayed.
