  • Jun Fan Gung-Fu

    Hello,
Does anyone have a good example of a basic Jun Fan Gung Fu curriculum? (Please be specific) My Jun Fan is a little rusty, and I am trying to get my technique back. I know the basic progression, but I am looking for a more specific curriculum to supplement my personal training. Thanks in advance.

        He's back!

Go to http://stickgrappler.tripod.com/ for rich info.

Sorry, I've been away for a week and now I'm sick as a dog, and the screen is making my eyes melt right now.

I'll get back to you with some clinch drills that train kickboxing and trapping.

Okay. I'm feeling much better now. Asthma is a right mofo! But instead of the clinch, I think I'll give you basic self defense drills that train two concepts: economy of motion and "defanging the snake", as Kalistas would put it.

Stand side by side with your training buddy. Imagine you are at a bar. In fact, you might want to train in front of a table or some chairs.

Hold a plastic cup in your dominant hand (right for righties).

Your buddy punches at your head on your dominant side (make sure he is standing to your right if you're right handed).

          This is the variable bit:

Economy of motion: perform a bong sao (wing arm) with your dominant arm while dropping the cup. Use your forearm to parry his blow. Grab his punching wrist with your other hand, lop sao into a hammer fist (don't use a back fist, although you could. Your knuckles are probably too tender for that, though.) Aim for the tip of his jaw or his temple. If you want to get nasty, aim for the middle of his collar bone, if the angle is right.

Maintaining your grip on his arm, bring your attacking forearm down hard on the inside elbow of his seized arm. Dip your head so your nose is pointed at his elbow, and headbutt.

Here one of two things happen: either he pulls away or he stays and pretends to be stunned. If he pulls away, palm his face and back off into a fighting stance. Since you'll be side on, you should follow up with a sidekick to his knee.

If he is stunned, use your attacking arm (your dominant limb) to back-forearm him in the neck and sweep him to the floor with your lead leg, maintaining the grip on his arm with your other hand. Deliver several hammerfists to his head and back off.

          Defanging the snake:

Simply replace the bon sao with a high elbow destruction. Perform the "combing the hair" action to institute a high cover and point your elbow at his incoming fist. You may use your other hand to guide the fist on commitment. Do not reach for his fist. If the fist lands on the elbow, follow up as before. If the fist misses to your front, grab your opponent's limb with your less dominant hand and break his arm with your right forearm. If his fist misses to your back, perform an arm drag by first firing a bil jee with your less dominant side, sliding your dominant arm down his limb to his wrist. Grab his wrist and bring your other arm down hard on the inside of his elbow. Take him to the ground by torquing your body so that your weight pulls his wrist towards you and down. Break his arm on the ground with your knee.

Many of the wrist grabs can be substatuted with a forearm placed to the opposite side of the oppenents arm with relation to your other forearm. However, this shouldn't be done with the arm drag. Experiment, and you will know what I mean.

          Respect.

Jun Fan should be practiced with a instructor I dont know where you are in your training but if like you say you are just rusty then work on smoothing your tools out and find your timing again find a partner if need be to assist you in regathering your training but look around for other jf/jkd people in your area to train with good luck on your comeback to Jun Fan
