  • Vunak vs. Inosanto

I have a question. What are the benefits in training with either of these two men. I know Mr. Inosanto was Vunak's teacher, but has since gone on to doing great things in the MA's. Mr. Inosanto however, is a legend in his own right.

If you had to choose between learning from either of these two men which would it be? What are the benefits each bring to the table? How does the JKD that Vunak does, differ from that of Inosanto?

Well I haven't trained witn Inosanto..... I want to, but haven't had the chance as of yet. However, I have trained with Vunak.

Paul's approach is pretty hardcore, and he quickly throws you in the "water" so to speak. You learn how to get in, blitz, get out, and get in again if you need to... His RAT program focuses mainly on the entry, the straightblast, and an array of standing elbows, headbutts, and knees. The program is good, but isn't fool proof in my opinion (but what is?) With Vunak you will learn a lot of realistic weapon systems, BJJ, submission, dirty tactics, etc.
Paul is an advocate of sparring, and a lot of times, sparring full contact with sticks, blasts, grappling, etc. He does his stuff well.
You will definitely learn to be athletic and how to quickly fight with Paul.

Inosanto, from what I've seen has many different types of classes you can choose from Jun Fan to Penjak to shooto to BJJ.
His knowledge of MA is immense. But having not had the priveledge to study with him yet, I can't say a whole lot. He seems to have more variety though.

          Another of Vu's pages: http://fighting.net/

I'll echo what Ryu said. Guro Dan is a treasure trove of information - the guy never stops learning. I've had the pleasure of attending one of his seminars and he would show variation upon variation for everything that he taught us. If the art is what interests you, Dan is the man.

What Vu has done is take what he feels is the most street-worthy material and organize it his own way. If realistic self-defense is what interests you, go with Vu. I trained at a PFS school in Vancouver for about 2 years.

This is JKD we're talking about here. You don't have to make a "one or the other" choice. If you have the opportunity, train with both men. In a perfect world, everyone's JKD would differ from everyone else's.

            Couldn't've said it better, aseepish!

In then end, anyone who trains seriously under either instructor will come out a worthy fighter. It all has to do with exploration and commitment.

If you wanna learn to "just fight" & are not too concerned with the art, go with Vu. I believe he's taken "the best & what's most combative from Dan & applied to to R.A.T.

Although, if fighting isn't what you're first concern is then perhaps
learn from Dan & "find your own best" & create youre own thing based on your interests.
