  • Hapkido-effective or not?

Hi. I'm from the northwest Houston, TX area, and am looking for a street-effective fighting art. I have been researching different fighting arts, and I am interested in hapkido. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with hapkido and can tell me if it is very combat-effective. Other styles that people have recommended are kuk sool won, jiu jitsu, and tukong moosul. I'm looking for something that is very effective (teaches you how to fight, not just defend yourself from a particular choke or grab), teaches how to fight against both "street-style" and "martial-arts style" attacks, is fairly comprehensive (i.e., incorporates strikes, kicks, grappling, joint manipulation, and maybe some weapons), but at the same time, also is more "traditional" and looks good, and doesn't take terribly long to learn. The combat value is the most important thing, but the others would be nice. Does such a style even exist? If you have experience in any such styles, I would appreciate your help. If you could recommend a good school in NW Houston, that would be even better, since the styles vary from school to school. Thanks.

Talk to this guy, Alain Burrese. He's not in Texas, but he may be able to provide you with some good information.

    Tell him Spanky sent ya.

    Oh, and buy his book!

hapkido all those martial arts are too long to learn and takes super time..

i mean the same with any martial art but certain martial arts you can still us during your learning experiance and even if your a novice in that art...

hapkido you have to be real good and in it for a little bit to defend yourself properly using that art

boxing, muay thai, wrestling, brazilian jj .. you'll be tought and able to use it the first few weeks few months.. so on and so one until you reach your peak in fighting..

if you are in it for the long hall.. be my guest.. take hapkido
