Motorcycle helmets do not work well I had a guy that wanted to try them years ago blacked his eyes bruised him up good decided no gear was better. But yes head buts weapon strikes might be useful. Kendo or umpire face sheilds would work to a degree. Even hocky face sheild may work. But if its just punching use the gloves 16oz wont hurt to much. eye pokes with a face sheild wont let you know it got in. might just need to modify some of the above gear and it may work for youOriginally posted by PocketAces
In his Street Safe I and II tapes, Paul mentions that appropriate equipment for these types of drills, as well as headbutts, is problematic, so he uses motorcylce helmets, which you can see in the videos. You should check with him in case he's come up with something better.

Mike,
I use old fashioned boxing headgear most of the time even when I straight blast (more of a boxing blast now) and grapple with more vale tudo rules. This is good, but you can still get injured or injure someone else if you're not careful.
Some really good headgear with face covering, etc. can be found at Rich Dimitri's site. www.senshido.com
Enjoy.

You can get a similar type of foam/plastic face shield set-up from Asian World of Martial Arts. The Lightning head gear and plastic face shield combo won't cost as much as Senshido's. I cannot directly compare the two, but it might be worth a look. The web address is www.awma.com.
Hope this helps.

I use normal boxing headgear with a face shield + the kind of goggles you would normally use in a workshop; they are strapped onto the shield with pieces of shoe laces.
They come cheaply and offer sufficient protection when somebody attacks the eyes.

Bri This was in about 1984. The person was having me train him for a tough guy fight. We had sparred several times. That day he showed up with a motorcycle helmet to spar in. I told him it would block some of his vision and when I hit him it would slam into him. He said it would be better then me punching him so he wore it . After we sparred he took it off and I was right Banged him up and also he could not see the hook punches very well at all. I do noy think the visor would help. Full power punches still bang the helmet. NOW if they have improved so much since then it may be different. Have not hit anyone with a helmet on since that time so I can not say for sure if it still bangs aginst your head or not.Originally posted by Bri Thai

In all seriousness, the effectiveness of hitting the head is that it then rattles the brain. Of course you can injure the surface of the head also (which the helmet would offer a great deal of protection), but the helmet would offer much less protection against the whole head being slammed about. And its the long term effects of having the brain bumped about that cause the punch drunk syndrome.
I know of some guys who hit the head hard in training. think they're fairly unwise, but do concede that it is effective training (until you stagger about like Muhammed Ali).
