  • Which Vunak Tapes do you recommend?

    Hi all,

Looking at Paul Vunak's site, I noticed that has about 23 (TWENTY THREE!) Tapes for sale.

If you had to pick 5 or 6, which ones do you recommend?
    Ryu, got any ideas?

Start with the streetfighting series and get them in order.

They are great, but you really need some training at an actual school, or several for that matter, to really get something out of them.

You cant learn MA from an armchair

        No, no.

        I believe it goes;
        1-straight blast
        2-Dumog
        3-HKE
        4-Attributes

then he gets into some weapons tapes, mass attack, etc.. and yes, eventually anatomy of a street fight.

        Get 1-3 for sure.

He has a tape from a seminar that breaks down the system well, teaches a beginner alot and is actually pretty funny.

You get the type of laid back, no bullshit guy he is. He talks to you like a good friend, none of that sensai master bullshit to show respect.

You respect him because of who he is and what he does and teaches, not because of his degree of black belt.

          Thanks

          Infighter,

          I appreciate the feedback.
I am assuming that you have trained with Paul. I'd like to hear more about your experience.

I can't really afford training with him at the moment but I do plan to that eventually. I was most curious to watch his tapes and see what he is all about.
I have heard his "Anatomy of Street Fight" series (Two tapes) is fantastic.

Currently, I am doing Muy Thai which is pretty basic in some ways but I'd like to see Paul's Street fighting instructions.

Everything I have read FROM him and ABOUT him, I like!
The only thing that bugs me a tiny bit are his marketing ways, i.e "Give me two days and I'll turn you into a street fighter," (or along those lines) etc.....
I guess everyone has to Market their products in order to sell.

i have not trained with Paul Vunak but have with one of his certified instructors and plenty of straight up sadistic bros certified by Dan Inosanto, two of which actually helped Paul test under Dan.

As outrageous as it sounds, if you trained with Paul Vunak for two days you would be one hell of a streetfighter. You sure as hell couldnt walk in the ring and fight Vanderlei Silva, but the way he teaches and the tools and techniques you will learn will take out 90% street conflict AS LONG AS you are the one to strike first and initiate.

I hate this "when he throws a punch.." shit. If you want ot win a fight, its "when he leans in to say something..."you headbutt his face and dont stop the HKE until he is out of comission.

Nobody ever blocked their way to victory.

              re

              Hey Bruce Lee Fan,

I have trained with Paul many times the most recent was my last trip to his house in Cali. My father and i have been a father son team since i was six in the martial arts. My dad is only 18 years older than me. We first bought tapes of Pauls and worked the info off the tapes. Then we finally contacted him. He sent us to Jim Miller at that time a phase one instructor under him in Minnesota. Since we are from Wisconsin thats who Vu appointed us to get started. Let me tell you at that time I was completely reborn in martial arts. Jim Miller had Vu up to Minnesota in his garage type training area. I thought i was awesome because Vu didn't need some big facililty or anything he just trained. The back yard training mentality was really cool. My dad and i waited unpatiently as Vu walked though the door and came around and shook everyones hand. I was bestilled he was like a movie star to me and i could not wait to train with him. This finally happen after about a year off watching his videos everyday. Well to say the least we started off by Paul having a really in depth talk with all of us. Since we were only in a group of ten he wanted to know all of us personally. He talked about learning to relax and then said he was going to roll with everyone show them the lack of panic and how relaxed he was and to get us to know that feeling. Rolling with Paul is like rolling with a cobra and Paul never put a technique on only went from postition to positition at will. Anyway to make an even longer story short that was when i was awarded my apprentice instructorship. Now currently in Nov my last trip my father and i got our phase one instructorships. We are Pauls representives for Wisconsin. I live in Madison and my dad Lives two hours North in Wausau. I have my grand opening for teaching Jkd at Gold's Gym here in Madison in March and i am getting positive feedback already about people wanting to train.
Sorry for this being so long but it sounded like you interested in hearing a little about Vu. As far as tapes go they are all good they are all exciting and they all have a wealth on info. Then find yourself an instructor in you area from Pauls organization it will be cheaper for you and it will give you a start before you go out by him. If we had not done that with Jim Miller we would have been lost very quickly.

Hope to see you in the PFS family soon,

Bruce_Fan, you've already got some great advice. The anatomy of a streetfight tapes are among the newer tapes, and yes I'd highly recommend them. However, they're not really basic tapes, so I agree that you should check out the Streetfighting series, 1-3, etc. Your Muay Thai training should really help you adapt to Paul's type of training because your clinch work will be already strong going in. Make sure to get a lot of good groundfighting experience with knowledable grapplers too for when you have to go to the ground.

About Paul's "ads" in those magazines. Actually, the companies that created the ads kind of blew Paul's request, to tone them down, off. Paul actually publishes a small disclaimer that appeared in magazines talking about how some of the companies made exaggerated claims about him and what he taught. And that he was actually embarrassed about how they advertised.

That's not something I've seen from a lot of people. Very good integrity there.

I'd say its safe to say that Vu is truly one of the best out there. His knowledge and personality are incredible to find in one person. Find a school and train, but buy some tapes, too.

I've got about 10 of them and I'll just watch them for fun and review sometimes. They are entertaining as well as informative.

I love it when his students are training going from range to range and when the are on the gound, Vu instructs "I hear sirens, 5.0 is on the way. Get up and give him one last shot then run." lol. Thats realistic.

                    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the advice!! I love it when the forum comes together so well

Yesterday, I watched tape 2 of Paul's Jun Fan JKD tape. This is one of his earliest ones made in 1987. Keep in mind that this was made before the UFC And all the MMA craze.

I was really impressed with the the control of RANGES in what he was teaching. In the classical systems, you hit someone once (Maybe twice) then you move back.

In Jun Fan, that's just the beginning. As Paul said, "You can use boxing, Thai Boxing, Savate, or Kickboxing to move into the lethal trapping range."

"Once in trapping range, YOU FORGET About kickboxing, savate. That's what you used to get here. From here, you use Wing chun, Kali, ju jitsu....... Or you may go for a lock, or maybe go for a Throw. The point is that you used your kickboxing to get here, now you discard it and move to the next RANGE."

OK, You guys all already know this!!! Nevertheless, I could not help but be impressed with what Bruce was teaching his students 30+ years ago.
Truly way ahead of his time........

                      Very basic breakdown

                      1. Stay out of range until you are able to inflict pain with a destruction, direct attack (i.e. kick to the balls), interception, etc..

                      2. Take advantage of that moment to come in with the straight blast - wing chun chain punch/track and field right down the centerline and enter into trapping range.

                      3. Go for head/neck control and unload with as many HKE as possible, which will end the fight damn near every time. but..

                      4. If you do to the ground, relax, and go to a pretty scary and effective combination of GJJ and Kino Mutai (an art based solely on inflicting as much damage possible by biting and pinching and tearing flesh). I believe a couple of bites shown were the nipple bite, the groin bite, and the ever popular neck bite.

Yes, that is a very scary, animalistic, video. But if it ever came down to it....DINNER TIME

EVERYONE - PLEASE CORRECT ME IF YOU THINK I'M WRONG ABOUT ANY ASPECT, OR ADD SOMETHING THAT I MAY HAVE LEFT OUT OR NOT KNOW YET!!

I'll contribute what I can, but I am here to learn first of all. Thanks, bros.
