    I was thinking about overcoming opponents and something came to me: The process of overcoming your opponents seems to be a constant repitition of Observing-Adapting-Defeating.

    Observing to come to notice his strengths and weaknesses if any can be found.

    Adapting to those apparent weaknesses, or creating some openings.

    Deafeating your opponent completely (making sure your opponent is no longer capable of threatning your win, per se utterly inforcing your will.)

    I just wanted to know what you people HONESTLY think about this idea. I would truly apreciate anyone's input,

    For point sparing i think its a good start. That is of course assuming you have had the training neccesary to be able to adapt.

      I thank you for your insight and will study this point further.

      But I'm not really interested in point sparring. What do you do mentally before&during a fight?, if you don't mind me asking. I've heard to do nothing and just let you mind work naturally.

        I have images of me attacking my opponent with what i have been trained with, I just stare at my opponenet and look him up and down to see where his strengths and weaknesses are, and then just have images of different attacks in my head.

            siegfried, you knucklehead.

            you come along and ask a not-particularly-insightful question. then when someone offers you a meaningful answer, you roll your eyes. brilliant.

            scott kano was suggesting visualization. picture yourself successfully applying techniques. it's a common and well-considered technique being used by athletic trainers nowadays.

              K guys, i may be going out on a limb here but.............picturing yourself kicking some guys ass in your mind and actually doing it, are two different things. Just because you picture or day dream about it, doesnt mean you can do it. Sorry to pop your cherry!

                oh for god's sake.

                nobody's suggesting that it's the whole shooting match. it's a mental tool. nothing more. nothing less.

                are you seriously telling me that you couldn't have thought about that a minute or two longer and come to that conclusion on your own? you just don't strike me as daft enough to actually believe that that's what scott kano was suggesting. just think about beating them and you'll beat them.

                  thats pretty sweet Siegfried. i often find myself taking many different stances while fighting. One minute I'll be in a cat stance ready to push their hip off balance and the next minute I'm in a deep karate stance. The reason is because differeent people (or different styles) react and fight differently against different stances. And I personally can do better against different people (and different styles) while I am in different stance.

                  Although my actuall fighting method is "no mind fighting"...as in, I just let my body do the fighting instead of taking time to plan out a move. But hey, what works for me might not work for you.

                      and you are right. but i think kano meant something different. like coming up with a attack "plan" with images. kinda like one of those home repair manuals. not like he was sike-ing himself out to win.

                        Siegfried: mines more like, Attack-Adapt-Defeat.

                        I learned visualization from my high school wrestling coach. I dunno if it works, but Im sure it helps.
