I completely agree with Ramus. This forum is here so that knowledge can be shared and ideas discussed. He wanted to know something so he asked, what's wrong with that?

What did I just read? Lizard and Ramus explaining to us why this forum is here and what role it fills?????

Ryan was encouraging you to go find out for yourself. That is the mother of all encouragements.

The single best way, as stated by Ryan here and Terry in another thread, and many other forumites throughout the many thousands of posts here is to find out for yourself

The blast can work well. I've used it.
However that being said, it's not invincible and really needs good attributes behind it to make it formidable in my opinion. (that's neither good nor bad, just my experience.)

If you want to throw a good straight blast, avoid rolling your fists frantically like you're playing "wheels on the bus". A good blast is almost a straight on, centerlined, series of crosses. You should blast forward, your strikes drawing power not just from your arms but from your hips and legs.

You sacrifice a wee bit of speed, but make up for it in power.

The blast will not always work everytime against everyone, and is open to a good wrestler's shoot. I have developed a couple new drills to counter this such as
Blasting at full power, the opponent drops and shoots in on you, trying his dammdest to take you down, you immediately flow into a well timed sprawl. Repeat the drill.

I also sometimes just clinch normally without the blast and proceed to HKE from there. It is a sneakier way to get into HKE mode since most think you're just going to "grapple" at that point.

by the way, the "blast to sprawl" drill and the clinch entry to HKE are my inventions so if you see anyone else doing them say......"HEY! Ryu did that stuff first!"

            Haha, or not.

            Hope that helps somewhat.
You do need to experience it yourself.

I would agree with lizard to an extent. But he hasn't been here long enough to see that ramus is all take and little give as regards inforamtion. And when he does give, it is "XXX is the best art ever", followed next week by "YYY is the best art ever".

As regards the straight blast I had difficulties making developing it to a level I felt confident with when I practised Wing Chun. But it did put people on the back foot when sparring or demonstraiting. Putting them in this demeanour is a great way to close them down, following up with stronger blows. But it would be harder to achieve on a hyped up maniac. A sparring/demo affair already has people on the defensive.

I read somewhere about somone developing the straight blast with finger jabs to the eyes. Sounds interesting........

SB is good. One thing I've had some luck in as a last-ditch defense against the straight blast is to drop your weight forward, cover for the hook lines and put your chin to your chest to let the blows hit the top of your head. Then it's a contest between your head and his fist. Even through boxing gloves you can wind up with hand injuries.

But once you get the guy's head back it's pretty hard to recover.

How does ground work factor in as a defense against the SB? Backfall to a few kicks to the shins and knees?
