That previous post was just my thoughts in general, and I wasn't directing anything towards you. Apologies if it sounded that way. I was just responding to the impression a got from the racist remarks that were created as a result of Bruce Lee's popularity. I know this was definitely not his intention though.

        Lizard,

Yeah, that's not Fist of Legend... Fist of legend rocked, totally recommend getting the DVD. Best Jet-Li movie. Good dubbing too surprisingly. Usually prefer sub-titles to voice-overs, but they pulled it off on this one.

        shasan.

No offense proud Chinaman, but you've watched too many Bruce Lee movies. He's awesome in his own respect, but to think he is the Chinese mega hero is outdated to say the least. Nowadays, Jet Li is the hero of choice. Still, people don't make an idol out of him, rather enjoy the action, stunts, athleticism and appreciation for Wushu.

Here's another reason why Bruce and other actors are not Chinese idols and it comes from an old Chinese saying that is still understood by 16 year olds today and possibly the reason why so many Western companies invest heavily in China:

Wan ban jie xia pin weiyou dushu gao.

What does that mean? Anyway you can't express tone over the internet so even a chinese person might not understand. Don't you also speak dutch?

Okay, now that I've done a little more scouting on this server, I see that this is indeed full of Bruce Lee fanatics. Obviously. Again, i apologize to RG for jumping in on another thread. Now I understand your frustration, my friend.

It's hard to put Bruce Lee on an altar considering all the controversy that flies around the Martial Arts globe. It'd be easier to just say the guy made some movies, helped others to see that their only limit is their ability to have boundaries or set rules, and had a rather intersting life, and just leave it at that. Move on. He's great to watch and I'll admit quite inspiring, but when it becomes a religion like following Christianity and saying " there is only one true God ", or listening to Nirvana and saying " Kurt Cobain was the greatest musician ever "; that's when it's gone too far. Just use what the man brought to this world to your advantage, and that is knowledge. Nothing more should be done.

Everyone has a childhood hero, but soon you grow up and realize that the hero you revered wasn't so much because of that select individual. It was because they were unique and posessed qualities and/or abilities that not many had discovered inside themselves.

By the way, in regards to Proud Chinaman's quote, is it me or is the only "Idiot's Guide To..." version of martial arts for TKD?
                    Just joking...

Yes, a quiet, quaint working class Japanese business guy that allmost allways gets fired from his job while escaping to fight giant monsters as SPECTORMAN.

"Powers, from space...he'll save the human race, he's SPECTORMAN"

The bird monster with two bird heads where his hands should be and no head! Or the brain with legs that could fall on people and take over their minds and bodies!!

                      I DO remeber him......1983 or '84?

Did Bruce really promote the image of Asian people? I mean, whats all this about getting at the Japanese? Sounds a little racist to me.

I think that anti-japanese thing was always in the context of martial arts. Bruce just wanted to get his Chinese-martial-arts-based theories across and compare them to the Japanese martial arts.

I think with Fist of Fury, the movie company (Golden Harvest or Shaw Brothers - can't remember) probably thought they could make a quick buck making a film where a Chinese person has the ability to fight back against the Japanese.

I think in the 60s, many people in Hong Kong and China still remember the Japanese occupation of China around WW2, and have some hatred for them. The movie company probably thought they could hit a soft spot and make money from this feeling by the Chinese people.

I do think that "Way of the Dragon" was more of a comparison between the fluid Chinese styles with the more rigid Japanese systems though.

Strictly speaking, Karate is not a "japanese" style. It is Okinawan. And alot of Japanese styles are fluid also.. JJ or Aikido.
