  • TKD Patterns Competition

    Hello.

At the end of the month I am participating in a patterns competition and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good ways to practice as its my first time.

    Thanks in advance.

    Adam.

You could watch paint dry, or try to hear the grass grow.

It won't help you with fighting but, then again, neither will patterns.

I hope you do well in your robot dancing competition!

            Patterns Competition

            Hmmmm.....Thanks for that Thai Bri.

Was it Yoda that once said "It is the ignorant the fortune favours"?

            Key word "Competition"
            Non-Key Word "Fighting"

            Oh never mind.

            Adam.

I know. My point is that you could still have a "Watch Paint Dry" competition, and do yourself just as much good to your fighting abilities. Durrrr brain.

But he wasnt saying he wanted to train for fighting. He said he wanted to get better in forms so he could win a competition. A competition is not a fight and your argument has nothing to do with the topic.

But then again I do agree that forms are worthless and shouldn't be part of any training.

They just teach you a series of movements. Is your opponent going to do what you expect them to do in your next trained movement? Probably not.

Why learn a kata that teaches kick block punch if the guy is going in to take out your legs? It just doesnt make sense.

They may instill the basic movements and teach you how to execute them better, but if I say take kickboxing for 4 months and my buddy takes karate for 4 months. He learns kata after kata and the basic blocks, punches and kicks and I learn all the basic punches and kicks and then actually use them against someone. Saying that we are the same build and strength, I am betting that I will kick his ass over and over.

                      Its just common sense.

If Katas were worthwhile, wouldn't heavyweigth boxers use them? Look at the money to be made. Of course they would use them.

But, luckily for boxing, they don't live in a dream world.

read the sig..."Thai Bri - He rarely makes sense, often deviates off topic, and sometimes even gets banned, but he remains undefeated.

BTW - Boxers are generally uneducated, punch-drunk brutes who train to the theme music from "Rocky" in a dingy dirty smelly gym.
Martial artists who do katas are educated, philosophical, sensitive types who train to the sound of one flute and one drum and do katas on the beach at sunset.
