remember though sirmattu, it's the artist, not that art, that show the effectivness of the art, and so far, we haven't seen that many great tkd'ists.
it just all depends on what he's looking for too

              Great TKDists !

              Dear M. Artist,

Where are you looking to have not seen many great TKD practitioners? Have you ever heard of the RoK (Republic of Korea) Military. They were world renowned during the Vietnam War for their hand to hand skill and ability!

I refer you to my post "Glad to Know" on this site as well as similar posts on other sites!

These men dedicated their lives to this art only for the uninformed to make assumptions based on some olypmic hopeful, or even worse the idiot that read a book and now thinks he is qualified as a grandmaster!

                  !

Yeah, especially considering that no one used guns during that war.

                  Oh, wait a minute.......

Yeah. That's why tkd does so well in competition with other arts, 'cause no one trains hard enough! Its so obvious!

                      TKD for Defense!

                      One more thing,

Fighting is fighting and sport is sport...studying volleyball or baseball will not make you more capable of defending ones self (other than becoming physically fit). Well, sport style, competition based martial SPORTS offer little more than the same.

I agree with Sirmattu's comment that the instructor plays the major role in the equation. If he/she trains olympic hopefuls then self defense is not the priority and vice versa.

Also, the students mindset is the other portion of the equation. Are you intent on learning to defend yourself? Do you study combat as a whole and from a realistic point of view? How do your standards rank compared to others. You will react as you have trained (not only technically)...so, if you train for fun every now and then and are scared to sweat...DON'T BLAME TKD!

People seeking self defense and/or combat arts should stop blaming the "sport" of TKD...Fighting is best taught in the oldest dojang of all...The school of hard knocks!

"pain is the best teacher, yet few are willing to go to his class"...Choi Hong Hi

Capoeira is an effective fighting art too. Remember, there are two forms of Capoeira: Capoeira regional and Capoeira angola. i forget which is which, but the one is the very flashy, dance-like, performance-art, game-style Capoeira, and the other is the combat Capoeira and it does not really have much flash at all to it. Remember, Capoeira was outlawed because of the revolts it was helping. But then it also branched into a sort of performing art as well. The combat Capoeira has ground-fighting and such in it as well. Just if you get jumped on the street, don't start dancing around

(actually, if you really WERE jumped on the street, I do wonder how the criminal would react if the person they were trying to rob just started dancing around )

                          go to Capoeira and:
absorb what is usefull, reject what is useless, add especially what is your own

then go to Tae Kwon Do and:
absorb what is usefull, reject what is useless, add especially what is your own

then go to open park where you can concentrate alone then combined them both and:
absorb what is usefull, reject what is useless, add especially what is your own

                          Note:
the essence of Jeet Kune Do

                          1. Simple, Direct and to the point.....

                          Note:
Jeet Kune Do of your own (according to your own potentials)

Personaly I would do Capoiera..... Among many other good points capoiera teaches you some very important thing: how to fight staying relaxed, how to read your opponent and a better understanding of balance... Practicing Capoiera gives you also better control of your body, and many of the moves can be adapted to groundfighting (scisors, triangles....). If later you decide to learn grapling these skills may be of great help, furthermore you will already know how to kick on the ground...
