  • Seikido (akido and tae kwan do) or Hapkido

    Hello i am new here

I have a choice of taking the following martial arts (i am a beginner)

    Seikido
    Hapkido

(Not sure if i wanna do the following, but i have teh option to do it)
    Karate
    Tae kwon do
    jiu-jitsu

I basically want a martial arts that is practical and for self defense. So is it seikido or hapkido??
Appreciate your help, please comment and offer your opinion.

    Hello there!

I think you need to ask yourself some questions to define what is "practical":

    1) Do you want a pure self-defense or competition?
    2) Do you care about the cultural and spiritual aspects?
    3) Do you have a strong physics and will to bear pains?

I could roughly help to guide you after you answer those 3 questions. Best wishes.

                  1) Not a pure self-defence or a MA that just looks good. I want it to have both aspects.

2)Cultural and spiritual apects, perhps it may be interesting to learn, but i have my own.

3)Well, i would like to think that i am fairly strong, and dont mind pain. Although not to the extreme.

My view of TKD is just pure kicking, and i would like a MA which involve the whole body. (ie throws, some grappling, kicks punches etc... a bit of everything, hence practical)

there's nothing wrong with relying on kicking if your proficent enough to get the job done with kicking. tkd doesnt teach only foot technices.

I would reccomend either hapkido or jujutsu. I am personally taking hapkido and love it.

I would recommend a harder ryu of Jujutsu. Maybe even Krav Maga (except that it is very practical that it doesnt look that good ). Aikido and Hapkido maybe too spiritual and soft for you. However, if you insist on Aikido, I'd suggest Tomiki-ryu/Shodokan Aikido. I would suggest the same idea (take a harder ryu/branch) for Hapkido. Otherwise, they will be too spiritual and take too long to cultivate. Linear arts are simpler and easier to master, but they are less sophisticated. Circular arts are more difficult to master, but they are more sophisticated.

If you dont have any background, I'd suggest you to start with a linear art, though. Find a good Karate. A good Karate is not neccesarily involving brutal sparrings. A good one will also have some Nage (throwing) and Kansetsu (joint lock) technics.

A mixed MA doesn't mean that it is better than its roots. If the founder doesn't create something fundamentally more progressice from his understanding, than it is only a "mixed" art. It can be very well bad gathering of chunks of its roots, just like Frankenstein. I'd also suggest you to find one fundamental art that you like as a basic. MA just like any knowledge, should look like the letter T; a strong basic and a broad branch.
