  • Does Karate have the same kicks as TKD

I have always wanted to know if any karate stlyes have the same kicks as TKD.

And if they do, do they kick the same with the same technique.

This guy i knew told me that there side kicks are less powerful.
    Is that true???

hey man i would think they would have the same basic kicks as tkd but probably wouldnt practice all of tkds kick.but i wouldnt doubt the power in there kicks. it all depends on the practitioner.

The base of taekwon-do is karate mixed with traditional korean foot fighting(answer based on ITF Theory), so almost all of the kicks are the same, taekwon-do just focus's more on the foot fighting vs the hand fighting..... however don't mistake the ablity of taekwon-do practitioners to use there hands, it all depends on the school and organization of taekwon-do + cross training. In my school you are chastised if you don't keep your hands up / punch when you are to close to kick.. however in the WTF school i train in(cardio) they keep there hands at the side and don't punch at all... it all depends on the school

            Not always true!
I do WTF Taekwondo, and we have to keep our hands up when practicing, or else the entire group gets a penalty (usually push ups).

Sidekicks less powerful? Hmmm *scratches sore ribs*

The technique and mechanis for a sidekick are a little more involved than for say a front or round kick... but it's very strong...especially connecting with the right target. (My short ribs are still aching from a kick in December...OK, so I am a repeat offender: running into them wide open...but still)

TKD kicks emphasize more pivot on the supporting base foot. The sidekick in tkd is totally different from the shotokan japanese side kick. Also tkd emphasizes the use of the instep when doing the roundhouse (turining kick) where as a lot of Japanese (shotokan) roundhouse with the ball of their foot.

The answer is yes the kicks are different But I am comparing moo duk kwan tkd VS Japanese Shotokan. Others will have different experiences.

I see the pivot and it makes a lot of sense to me, in the mechanics...

But our style TKD uses both, instep and ball of the foot...roundkick is truly for all occassions!

Common miss conception. Korea was a power house in the far east probably a considerable time before Japan was known for it's martial class...

I Have trained in Karate and Tea kwon do. Tea kwon do seems to have more speed to the kicks, while karate seems to aim for power. Neither is better just your preferances. But yeah as previously stated, its up to the style and the practitioner.

Just one thing... learn to spell it correct, please?
It's spelled Taekwondo (WTF) or Taekwon-do (ITF).

You got a point. I have read thousands of post on other forums where everyone says "my style is the best". There really is no "best style". Everything, and I mean everything depends on the practitioner, as you say.

Haha! Yeah i've never been one for correct spelling ^_^ i remember the style of TKD i did was spelt how you said, but whatever. I am gonna start doing hapkido though as i havent done any martial art for a while now other than boxing, and yeah of course it relies on the practitioner, but in order for the practitioner to be good the art has to be able to be used. Naturally there is no "better" art considering they all have advantages and disadvantages.

What style of TKD were you training and for how long?
I myself have been doing WTF Taekwondo for 5½ years and I love it. Great club and it works perfect as self defense for me.
We have Hapkido in the same club too... gotta say it looks really cool, but I'll stick with TKD until 1 Dan the least, but I got to agree that it looks interesting ^_^

You got a point... example TKD... the weakness of TKD as I see it is that it's mainly based on kicking when performed. But a skilled TKD practitioner has no problem with combining punches and kicks, while many beginners have big problems with this. And for WTF TKD most of the practitioners keeps their hands down!
In the club I'm in we have to keep the hands up, or the entire group gets a penalty (usually push-ups), which I think is great. Same with Kihap. Many people doing TKD, even people with black belt, has sissy (spelling?) Kihap's.

Good luck with that Hapkid now!
                            TAEKWON!!

I used to do Rhee Teakwon do, a couple years back, i did it for about 3½ years, then i had to quit due to lack of money.. so the story of my life goes so far =D but i have also done shotokan karate when i was five and a different style more recently. I have also had a very lil bit of experiance in chaw gar tong long southern mantis gung fu. Though Currently i am gonna cross train between my boxing and hapkido. Its gonna be cool, i join hapkido tommorrow. I reckon its awesome though because of my previous training in MAs I allready know most the things i need to in order to be a higher belt... i wonder if therer is anyway i can grade according to my level of skill... i guess i'll ask.
