Also karate or Te had been knocking around in Okinawa in various forms for a lot longer, but it wasn't adopted in the Japanese mainland until the 20th century when Gichin Funakoshi introduced it. Don't ask me to quote dates.
My main point is, people refer to these "ancient" fighting arts like they have some kind of mysticism attached, yet you don't hear people discussing the ancient art of soccer or rugby, although these sports probably pre-date many of the martial arts practiced today.
