you always need to worry who you are getting in a fight with.

You never know what that person knows. I teach tkd, and train in JKD and BJJ. I've done TKD for 20 years. Make the mistake that I'm going to be like the other TKD school in town and you'll be in for a world of hurt.

I've got flexibility, speed, and ability to out manuver a lot of guys when i'm on my game. Plus i've done some MT and a hand full of other arts.

When I taught at the college I sparred with every student, I also did ground work with every student in the self defense class. We also did weapons work with free flow weapons.

I'm not saying the class you are taking is worthwhile, but there may be a few things you can learn.

I agree with the thread starter. There are some serious problems with TKD. Of course, understand, some people can use it to great effect. Most people cannot. If you can kick accurately with a lot of speed and power, then you can overcome it's limitations. But this thing depends on the defender as well. I used to love kicking in Karate, it was easy to wins school contests with it. But I find them of little use now. Especially because an Okinawan punch actually makes it really hard to kick the heard, but real easy to kick the shins. It's not suitable for everyone, and I have no doubt, as long as you can do it without falling over (or even if you do fall over) some characters will take your money anyway.

zhorner I challenge you to a fight. If you lived here I would fight you with my TKD and you would lose because I would knock you out with a kick to the head.

ANd the fact you think taking advantage of girls who are doing push ups and looking at their butts because your a horny pervert shows how much you lack in the martial way. Grow up.

Bas actually never stayed with TKD that long. He started in it when he was younger as it was his first martial art but after he got into a streetfight and won (by punching, not kicking), his parents wouldn't let him take it anymore.

            From basrutten.net:
I was training for about four weeks (this was Tae Kwon Do, by the way) and then got into a street fight with somebody who always was bothering me. They called me names and this time I shouted back. He came at me laughing and wanted to fight me. I punched him one time and broke his nose broke. Wow, martial arts are great!! Too bad my parents found out, and that was the end of my fighting adventures.
After he got older, he did it for a time more as he enjoyed the flashy kicks but then moved on to karate (he has black belts in shorin-ryu and shotokan if I remember right), and then finally Muay Thai. Most, if not all, of his striking comes from the Muay Thai and karate.

okay, i will you fight you. come to oklahoma city, and we will meet at western heights on s.w. 44 street. it will be in a wrestling room, and a controlled environment, ( that means their will be someone their to pull me off of you, and hopefully prevent the crushing of youe esophagus, or, from you back-flip super aerial fancy drop kicking me while im knocked out). The rules are as follows.....no fish hooks, eye gouging, biting, pinching, and hair pulling. I would say no cod-shots, but every time you kick me to the head, i will snap kick your groin. This will show you the true handy-capped nature of your head kicks. yes, you are allowed to wear a cup. no head gear you fucking monkey. you decide on gloves, i say no, but if you do want to, if would have to be open fingered pride/ufc style. you are more than welcome to add any rules, i am willing, but not recommended due to you being a complete ass-monger, to have no rules at all.

a very good post. it is reasuring to know that he took tkd, but the fact that he gave it up for the other types of MA backs up my theory that tkd is a homoerotic MA. bas rutten is a bad ass, i saw him on mak ker's smashing machine movie. by the looks of the training session, i fugured he was only a MT guy. speaking of mark ker, does anyone know when he fought last?

Will there be jelly wrestling at sw 44th street? That is the critical question.

bas did stay long enough in tkd for him to get his second degree. But yeah he did move on to train in a more full contact fighting (muay thai) system.

Gus: How many different styles of fighting have you trained in? Do you have any ranks? Who do you consider your teacher?

Bas: Tae Kwon Do 2nd Degree, Kyokushin Karate 2nd Degree, Thai boxing yellow slip (just kidding), Kyokushin All round fighting 5th Degree (I received this after I defeated Takahashi. I didn’t do any test for this).
I thought a lot myself, striking wise I would say that I learned the most at Mean Ho gym in Breda Holland. Cor Hemmers is the teacher there, he is very good. I started learning the basics in Grappling with Chris Dolman in Holland.
But when he was beaten by shamrock he decided that he still needed to evolve into a more well rounded fighter. so he trained in grappling twice a day.
Its like anything though. he trained tkd but it lacked the full contact training,so he found muay thai. But that lacked the ground work so he learnt grappling.
I dont think it was tkd's techniques which were bad, it was just the fact that the lack of full contact training was not there. Ive heard him in many pride commentaries and other interview, him talking about tkd techniques. so i would think he still respects some of the kicking?

If I lived there I woudl spar you. YES SPAR! I am not really into a vicious fight with you. I just want to have fun and get some pointers. I am not really into to many rules.

I would really humble you and show you that TKD kicks are effective when used right. Not talking about flying kicks either.

dude, the only reason their would be any "jumping" going on is if i started to loose the fight. i would turn of myself and start to punch myself it the face. that way, it would mean that you jumped me, and that would make you a pussy. besides, how can a couple of stupid jocks jump a member of the "ninja death clan." you wouldn't want do it any ways, because the only way i would fight you is if you signed a shit load of papers saying that you acknowledge my credentials, ( state record bench press, grappling experience ), and you give me the right to kill you in a heated battle. i am not saying i am tough enough to kill anyone, their are a lot of people who can probably whoop me in my own community, but you never know when someone is going to have a heart attack while fighting and die. then you go to jail for manslaughter.

                                Hey Zhorner,

From my own personal experience with powerlifting, if you can max bench around 350 (lean body mass less than 200 lbs) then you are a natural athelete, 450 (lean body mass~220lbs) and 550 (lean body mass over 220) also natural. This coming from regular training with all three lifts and some supporting lifts, like the upright row, pullup, powercleans etc.

If you can bench between 50-100 lbs above these levels, you're probably consuming a good deal of creatine or amino's and have favorable strength genetics.

Anything still above that is probably roid territory, I guess.
