I don't know that it's made me calmer, but it does assist me in a fight-style situation and I take a lot less crap off people than I used to.

It made me realize that you will meet many people who need a good slap, but that it's not my job to slap them.

Quite calmer actually, I was docile to begin with though, now things roll off my shoulder, and I have no problems at all with aggression.

I would say it has made me less docile as i dont take much crap anymore, also i would say the physical aspects have made me more aware of my own strength, and therefore more testosterone.
Its made me alot less afraid of the big bad world.

I'm def. friendlier and more laid back when I have been training hard. I think that's because I channel my aggression into my practice. If anyone has experience with pittbulls they know that they can be sweet, well behaved pets. The thing is that they have been bred to be tough, physical dogs and that means they need lots of exercise. If a pittbull is kept penned up in a small area without exercise it will get more and more aggresive and tempermental because it is looking for something to do with all the energy that it has been bred to have. On the other hand if you make sure the dog exercises until it's exhausted on a regular basis it will be happy and therefore much more well-behaved. I've learned that I'm the same way. By training hard I get my aggression out in my work-out so that I won't take it out on the people around me. It makes it a lot easier to laugh it off when someone says or does something that might make me angry.

                    Martial Arts

More traditional martial arts, like karate/tkd/hwarangdo try to encourage the development of martial spirit.

While the defintion varies from school, origin and founder of art, it usually boils down to respect for others, respect for yourself, self-discipline, honor, respect and other character traits.

This is no means a religion. Its more of a philosophy.

Combat oriented arts spend less time on martial spirit and more on techniques that work, usually practiced against a resisting opponent.

Sometimes you find a school that is the marriage of both.

I have to be honest... I would have to say that it has balanced me. I started training in TKD in 1974. A lot of schools were cultish at that time..."Don't ever speak of your training, don't ever mention your training, don't ever use your training or we'll sneak into your room in the middle of the night, beat the shit out of you and jump out the window laughing!"

A message like that can make you avoid confrontations at all costs, even if someone is slapping you around.

Later when I when to college I began training under different instructors. My TKD instructor was still non violent... but no threateningly so. My Kru im Muay Thai (Kru Kak Koonala) was a little different. He was more aggressive. Don't get me wrong, he was one of the most generous people I have ever known but completely balanced. He would treat you like a son unless you fucked with him.

To borrow a phrase... I learned to be nice.. until it was time to not be nice.

I think that's a common philosophy among most martial artists.
