    anyone?

  • #2
Tang soo do is a Korean art that translates as Way of the Knife Hand.

It is a cousin to TKD and Hapkido

Despite popular belief, it is pronounced DANG SOO DO, NOT TANG SOO DO, but Tang Solo Do has been so integrated that it really cannot be corrected. DANG SOO DO means "Chinese Hand Way" which is pretty much the same as Okinawan Karate-do which meant "Chinese Hand Way" as well. Karate's meaning also got lost when the translation got screwed up when it went to Japan since back in the day Okinawa and Main Japan had some differances in language and writing. This same "Chinese Hand Way" originated somewhere in southern china, but it dates back so long that its been hard to trace exactly where it began. This is why Dang Soo Do, Karate-do, and even some southern chinese arts practice some of the same techniques and forms.

        Here are some links

It may be Pronounced as Dang, But it is spelled Tang.

Because that is how it works.

        Tao is pronouced Dow
        Tang is pronounce Dang

But it is mostly karate techniques.

If you have a chance to take Dang Soo Do, I highly suggest it. Dang Soo Do is very historical and encompasses some very old but insightful techniques. If you can find a good instructor, do it. A good Moo Duk Kwan school should have Dang Soo Do already in their curriculum. I have had the luck to study under a grandmaster and disciple of Hwang Kee, founder of the Moo Duk Kwan. I learned some good techniques and gained new insights that I actually incorporated into my MMA fighting skills. If you want to learn more, a good book is "Tang Soo Do" by Grand Master Kang Uk Lee. I personally try to stay away from internet sources.

I personally dispise Moo Du Kwan. There is a school here in town that teaches kata but if the students use their hips they get in trouble, they don't know how to follow through on their targets. They do not pivot. and etc. I have never in all the schools i've been to seen a good moo du kwan school.

I have had several students transfer but they get discouraged very quickly because they realize they don't know anything and they are high rank but are about 3 rank level. I don't make them start over but It takes them forever to catch up.

I don't know much about tang soo do. BUT, the one person I know that had taken it (7 years ago and was "rusty". He started as a white belt in our art) is one of the best stand up fighters I have seen. He has amazing power, quickness and movement. I am not saying that tang soo do is a good art or not. I am saying that just because the schools you have been to suck doesn't mean the art sucks.

I have been to over 50 Moo Du Kwan schools. So I do not judge styles lightly. I'm sure there could be good schools out there but the system itself has some problems.

No offense, but, you don't think TKD does not? If you do you are kidding yourself.

                    Depends on the system.

WTF as a system i don't care for
ITF I also don't care for

Songahm, Has problems as it is taught but the system has merit.

half of the schools i've been too of moo du kwan don't spar anymore. With no sparring a system will become useless.

well then those Moo Duk Kwan schools shouldnt be affiliated with Moo Duk Kwan. My grandmaster encouraged us to spar and change rules often. Not to mention, that is where I actually started getting interested in MMA since he also knew several styles of Karate and Kung Fu and would show us bits and pieces of them often. Well, I guess my school is special, but thats why I love it so damn much.

actually i'm not there anymore, I just haven't updated my info.

                            I live in missouri now.

I was not able to find a good place to work out while I was there.

I was hoping to have some luck with Frank Cucci's schooll, But they don't spar. I can't even imaging doing 3 years of muay thai and not sparring. Without sparring you should be able to learn muay thia in a few weeks. It's not like there are tons of technques.

Thats cool. Yeah, Ive noticed the severe lack of muay thai schools on the east coast except for NY and Florida. Its a shame. We all need to move to California.
