According to my Pride mailing list, he's fighting Carlos Newton at Pride 12. Johil seems a lot smaller in height mostly [5'6 to Newton's 5'10] but he seems to have some impressive wins and a good resume from what they said in the e-mail. Anyone know if he stands a chance or even can beat Carlos?

Anyone know anything about Johil de Oliveira?

Johil is a good expierenced fighter from the Budokan luta livre gym that also produced Ebenezer Fontes Braga. A versatile fighter that is very durable. His most significant win in nhb was against Pele, of course Pele avenged the loss in the rematch in IVC. His match with John Lewis back in 1996 was a DRAW since their were no judges but Lewis had positional dominance in most of the match while Johil was unable to pose a threat to Lewis but he did get a cool throw on Lewis. Johil has a great atitude and while maybe not the most tecnical fighter he will likly not give Newton an easy fight. Note though I expect Newton to have a significant weight advantage in this fight also Johil hasnt fought in a while his last fight I beleive was the Pele rematch back in 98 or early 99 but he did compete in the Luta Livre interstate championship (grappling) a couple months ago in the 75 kilos (165lbs) division. He is almost a team captain of the team, I remember back in an old Brazilian Vale tudo fight with Johil cornering his teammate who fought Pele and was getting thrashed and left the ring and Johil was furious and forced the guy to go back in the ring, I thought that was hilarious. Another team member fighter "The" Pedro had a terriable performance against Carlos Barreto that Johil kicked him off the team. The last fight that I saw with Johil was his contraversial win against wrestler Darrel Gholar in IVC where Ghollar was ground and pounding Johil and was making his face into hamburger and it was obvious Johil was having problems because Gholar was too strong for him since Gholar was a natural middleweight that cut weight to make the 80 kilo (177 pound) division. But Johil never quit and actualy landed some good kicks later on but he did not merrit the judges decision win in that match. Like alot of IVC veterans Johil is better suited for vale tudo fights rather then the Pride limited rules fights. Should be an intresting match and I agree with beatle that this should be a long fight and Newton will have a hard time submiting Johil but who knows since Newton has strong submision skills and will likly overpower Johil de Oliveira
