I think you guys are right on about the gi training. Tekshow, I trained 4 years at the gym where you are now. All without the gi. I moved to Straightblast Gym over a year ago and worked with the gi for the first time. It did slow things down. It really only took about a month or so to get used to. I still don't have alot of gi specific techniques though. It is definately worth training both.

ya, i hear the benefit argument, i was just trying to play the advocate

i understand people are wearing clothing you could grab, but i've found it better in my experience to grab the person and not what they are wearing... just my thoughts...

i train at northwest fighting arts -

Portland Martial Arts MMA Training Schools In Portland OR 503-235-3435. NWFA is a thriving community of like-minded individuals who are dedicated to developing their potential by training in the Martial Arts.

it's a pretty well rounded gym-

hey doubleouch - do i know you? when did you move on to SBG...

i think they are a great gym with skills in their areas, but i think i would miss the Tai Chi too much if i moved to an external only gym.

did you just absorb all you could from Jeff and moved on? i'd be interested in knowing your position on such things:

i used to train at this other JKD gym that J.D. was associated with for about 10 years, but the sifu there turned out to be an a$$hole and they kicked him out of the organization. it was really hard on me, it was the first gym i ever trained at and i spent my youth there only to find out the guy was a crook...

so i'm extremely leary of most instructors now... that's why i'm interested to know why you moved on...

PM me or in here, either way i think we can keep it respectful

              re

And I don't feel like re-explaining the gi. People who don't do traditional gracie and who don't wear a Gi won't understand. Like teaching a monkey a math problem.
Err, there are lots of other people besides the tiny world of bjj who do gi grappling. Do they not understand what they are doing? Should they refer to a fringe sport like bjj for all the answers?

Your reasoning is like this: wearing a gi helps your defence (in ground grappling) because it allows your opponent more handles to hold onto. Unfortunately it also changes the game somewhat. Activity specific training is very important.

Secondly, your argument must work both ways; while it might benifit the defender to wear a gi, it is detrimental to the attacker because it allows him more options than he would usually have in a mma comp. Bottom line is that bjj wears a gi because its traditional to wear one in judo based arts.
