? on judo/bjj in FL.

An old friend I used to know in high school called me the other day and asked me if I knew of anything good in Florida (since he lives there) that would teach in judo/bjj. I tried to do a net search, but the only bjj that came up was one run by Gracie in Jacksonville, Florida? *shrugs*

Basically, the net searches really didn't help. If anyone could provide me with specific information on judo/bjj classes that are in Florida, I would appreciate it, so I can then pass it onto my friend.

here are some listings not complete of course. Where in florida does your friend live?? But I would agree, look in the telephone book in the town or closest city. Judo will be more available than BJ, but BJJ is probably available in the cities

ok first, florida is a REALLY big place; please specify where in florida.

also, i know there is a machado place in miami, ive also heard about places in tampa and orlando. there are a few MMA tournys in florida so im sure that there are BJJ places in flo.

btw, it was interesting that the site bjj.org/acedimies site list a lot of the non-gracie instructors who are 3 4 and 5 stripe black belts as just black belts. idunno if its on purpose but its kinda weird.

They appear to list the ranks correctly as brown black 3, 4th etc

You're right, I should have specified better where my friend lived in FL. He lives in Lakeland, Florida, but is willing to travel a little (maybe as far as Brandon, Florida) to find a place. I'm not sure how familiar any of you are with Florida. I know I'm not.

Just a quick update: I gave my friend all the information provided (about the yellow pages, etc)

Well he did a search, and the only bjj he could find besides the one in Jacksonville was in a place called Sarasota. He said that one was too far away.

Judo was the same thing. All the places that have instruction are too far away for him to be willing to drive. The only place reasonably close was something that trained in Ju-Jitsu?

I always heard that Ju-Jitsu was the same thing as Judo, but I can't be sure. Anyone know the fundamental differences between judo & ju-jitsu? I know the question has been asked before (I checked) but the threads I saw focused on "which was better" not "what is difference between the two" *shrugs*

Jared Jujitsu is basically the parent style of Judo, Aikido, and to an extent Hapkido.

Judo: emphasizes chokes, and locks from standing and ground though ist is focused on throws.

Japanese Jujitsu: emphasizes (at different degrees depending on style) chokes, bone breaking and joint manipulation, pressure points, strikes, kicks, throws, etc. basically it is more complete.

BJJ: focuses on the ground fighting aspect of JJ/judo. Emphasis in chokes joint manipulation (locks - arm, leg ankle neck etc), takedowns. Kicks and strike are in the system but are usually used for set-up versus injury.


You will learn throws and breakfalls from all three arts. Throws of courese would be the best in judo. Realistic practice (randori) for Judo and BJJ, as well as JJJ (but it depends on the dojo).

These are really just a brief summary. I think your friend should be asking the questions if there is real interest. What cities are close to him, I find it hard to believe that judo is not available close by. I just be a net search in yellow pages typed "judo in florida" your friend is not trying very hard

sorry ipon but i happen to know for a fact that john jacque is a 5 or 6 stripe black belt and john machado is a 4th. marcus vinicius is a third. that site lists them as just black belts.

Cool, I am corrected, I just checked a and few it seemed accurate. Relson 9th dan, Renzo was listed as 3rd dan and Marcus santos as a BB.....but I don't know too much beyond that, my bad
