  • Has anyone tried Jeet Kuno Do?

I was wondering about how practical it is. Yes, I realize that there is a JKD forum but I don't want to be hearing any "Bruce Lee is GOD" rants.

it has a lot of merit. but quality of instruction varies quite a bit. Lots of phonies and people just trying to cash in. But the concepts are fairly valid.

Think how many people want to be Bruce Lee but can't pull it off too well. If you find a good JKD Instructor it is a pretty good well rounded style.

I've heard that the JKD folks in the Seattle area are a bit over the top. I'm still looking for info for you but I'd be wary, which of course, I need not explain to you.

I tried it, but the club I went to wanted to twirl sticks 60-70% of the time. They also did some ridiculous so called knife disarms. From what I understood, JKD tried to be a precise tool where, for example, Thai Boxing would be a battering ram.

For a real fight? Give me the battering ram any day of the week.

Stick with what works: wrestling, bjj, boxing & thai boxing.

Some people praise it as the worlds best. Some people bash it as the worlds worst.

In my opinion, Jeet Kune Do was not around long enough to have qualified instructors taught by Bruce Lee. Bruce was obviously busy with movies and family stuff, and I don't know his history or life story, to dedicate all the time necissary to train, and train qualified instructors. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is how I see it. Bruce may have been a "master" but his students, were they "masters?"

Wrestling, bjj, boxing & thai boxing is no match in KungFu.

                    Why?

Because when you heard the name KungFu - you dont know what KungFu Style or System will they use against this Wrestling, bjj, boxing & thai boxing.

Where as, i know all the tricks and mostly the techniques of this wrestling, bjj, boxing and thai boxing and i know mostly their fighting strategy...

                    while...

in kungfu.... there is many options, you dont know how wingchun fights, or angka, or the eight immortal gods.

                    another important thing is....

even if you study kung fu for three years - you could not still learn the entire art in one system.

do you see how effective the chinese martial arts?

especially those Bruce Lee fighting system which is "KungFu"

                    another important thing is....

Bruce Lee fighting system is compatible to all weakling thin person who study kung fu just enough to defeat a big brawl trouble maker non chinese martial artists.

I posted this recently on the JKD forum...

Most JKD isn't very good. I know, I have trained it. There is way too much emphasis on theory, trapping and energy drills, and way too little emphasis on punches and kicks, headbutts, knees and elbows. Most JKD people don't seem to sweat very much during training (this is important). They may be able to trap a limb in training, but would have major problems dealing with incoming blows in a real situation, and that's just the beginning. Some JKD people will do well in a fight, but only after many years on training, IMHO. I talked to a JKD teacher less than a year ago and he told me that training 3X per week, I could expect combat proficiency in 3-5 years!

I have trained with legendary JKD instructor Paul Vunak as well. He has filtered out virtually all the useless (or less useful) material and broken it down to just a few simple moves and concepts. He calls this system Rapid Assault Tactics, or RAT for short. It basically consists of interceptions and destructions for use against incoming blows, then the straight blast to close the distance, and HKE to finish him off. This system is very good, and is probably equal to a few years of regular JKD training, but without all the confusion.

If there are any JKD schools in your area affiliated with Vunak or PFS, I highly recommend them as opposed to other types of JKD. I would just probably stick with BJJ as opposed to most other JKD schools if not.

At the very least I want to watch a JKD class to see how they train. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any locations or phone numbers online. If anyone has any info that would be great.

Big Sean has 6 Washington JKD instructors listed. 2 of which have Seattle Addresses.

i am happy to add my two cents to this one! i have trained in jkd a few years ago. i trained with terry gibson (1989) for a few months but the travel to tulsa was costly. he concentrated on muay thai and kali and boixing. most of that was useful. i trained with another oklahoma jkd instructor who teaches the "original" jkd and frankly it was not very useful when i started bouncing. i have a pal who trained under the same original jkd system and has for ten years plus and he makes it work but he has lighting fast hands and good timing. i would stay with bjj, boxing, wrestling, modified thai boxing, maybe krav maga. and it is definitely buyer beware a lot of these guys are pushing this original jkd and other jkd stuff and its useless. trapping and energy drills are not very effective when a drunk starts throwing wind mill punches. and i had a black eye to prove my point. stick with techniques and training geared toward aerobic fitness and direct answers to an attack. trappping is time consuming in a "real " fight. also a lot of jkd instruictors don't spar much, particularly teachers of the "original" sytstem. so be careful cuase after all "you cannot learn to swim on land!"
