If you find a good Jiu-Jitsu school, go for it. Just because it isn't from Brazil isn't a bad thing. Helio learned Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, realized he was a wee one, modified the techniques to make Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. One of the big differences I think is Gracie takedowns are more wrestling styled, while Traditional jiu-jitsu does more throws. But then again.... it depends on the instructors.
Most of the schools will be McDojo style. Some will be ok. Very few will be good. JJJ is one of the more watered down arts in general. Don't look at the lineage of the instructor but observe a few classes instead. It's the training regimen and the techniques that matter. If you see little kids or fat people with advanced belts, that reeks of McDojo.
Even a good JJJ school will not spend much time with very technical groundfighting like BJJ.
"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him" Mark Twain
Mr. Miyagi is right to a large part. It is the instructor, not the certificate that hangs on the wall that teaches you. Yes, be wary of instructors that give out fries with every blackbelt and asks if you want it super sized for 39 cents. I also agree that kids should not have "advanced" rank. But fat people, what's with that? I have seen people that are over weight in every system. If you are talking about some guy that is 5' and 450lb's and loses his breath taking off his shoes, that's one thing. But just because a guy can lose 15 or even fifty pounds doesn't mean much. Look at Cabbage, he looks like he should be eating popcorn ringside instead of fighting in the UFC.
The McDojo thing is right on, watch out. But even in some, definitely not all, hell not even most, McDojo's the instructor will have a select cadre of students and instructors that he may throw down with, even though he promotes a 10 year old to 2nd Dan that has studied for all of 2.5 years. You never know, he may have a greedy, nasty, money grubbing, sleeping with your best friend and driving off in your new Mustang hoe of an ex-wife. That he has to pay or he will lose his shop because she owns half of the school on paper, because they were married when he started the business. But that is another thread.
