  • Why don't I just bite / kick balls / etc.???

I'm sure all of you guys have confronted this situation - if you haven't but are still training in MMA, you will eventually run into it:

You're just talking with your friends or family and the topic of MMA comes up. It's a friendly conversation, open and thoughtful, when of course "that guy / girl" who just happens pick up on this conversation decides to offer their two cents with: "Why don't I just bite you / kick you in the balls / bite your ear / etc. etc. wouldn't that beat everything?"

Of course you folks are shaking your heads (on the inside, trying to be polite to that person). My question is:

What's the best response you've ever heard to that question? (whether it be your own reply to it, or someone else's)

    Best regards,

The body can not do a lot of fine motor skills with so much adrenaline in your body. But I believe this site tells it the best. www.streetbrawl.co.za/content/index2.html Click on Re-evolution and then NHB for the street. The straight blast gym also has a lot of good responses since there JKD strongly resembles MMA

Tell them that if the fight goes to biting, poking, etc., the guy with control and position will still win because he can chew up the other guy while pinning him to the ground.

I guess kicking in the nuts is fine. But you should train for whatever kind of techniques you think will work.

Just remind them that the person in question probably isn't going to stand there and let you freely kick them in the man-berries, and keeping in mind that they would probably freeze up if attacked anyway.

I'm not sure that pulling a crackhead robber's ear off would end a fight.

And as far as bitting goes, nothing could be taster than a nice fresh slab of HIV positive flesh.....HMMHMM GOOD.

                    Response: bite, groin kick etc..

My response to that comment is that whatever you can use to defend yourself is fair game - it can be psychological, environmental, physical or whatever. If you can make someone laugh at you, ease up and walk out unscathed then technically you've defended yourself.

On NPR, I heard a stroy about a Palestinian comedian who was held up at gunpoint by some thieves in a bad part of Israel. With quick thinking, he made a spoof impersonation about some notorious political idols and the assailants let him go cause they thought he was hilarious.

Realistic self-defense training done consistently keeps your arsenal of techniques in the back of your mind and muscle memory from drill after drill to sparring/grappling sessions. Physical and mental conditioning make it easier for you to act under pressure.

Biting, groin punting are good techniques (especially for kids) to use against stronger assailants but do not make up a complete self defense arsenal IMO. Familiarity with ranges of fighting, basic weapons and physical/mental conditioning are more complete.

                      ask them to demonstrate.
stand up, take them down, get them into a solid mount while locking their arms up tight.
if you find yourself on the ground dribbling clutching the boys .
                      then they were probably right.

That would have to be close to best response. Personally I'd say something more smart-ass just because it would be the first words out of my mouth.

Freezing up doesn't just apply to when your only standing, going to the ground doesn't automatically stop the effects of 'adrenal stress'.
