  • Hughes vs Penn

Has BJ Penn lost his mind? Matt Hughes? The guy is steamrolling and overpowering everyone at 170 and Penn is going to give what, 20-25 pounds away to take this fight? He's good but I don't think anyone can give weight to Hughes and have a chance. I thought Trigg had a decent chance to beat him, and look how long that took.

Hughes is going to pancake Penn in the first round.

I am actually going to predict an upset on this one (as crazy as its sounds). Penn trained for quite awhile with Frank Shamrock and he knows what to do againts strong wrestling style opponents (a la Ortiz and Henderson). You can bet that Penn has been spending the last several months grappling with wrestlers heavier and stronger than Hughes. I am a big fan of Hughes but, unlike most people, I see this as a suprise win for Penn or Hughes wins a drawn-out decision.

coutore rolled with penn and said he definately has a chance. randy said penn was hard to takedown and hard to control. there is a bigger weight difference there.

to be a great fighter you need to fight great fighters. And that´s what BJ is doing. You don´t have to choose who you´re fighting. Always go after the big ones...

Penn is not giving up 20 lbs. He sits at about 175-180lbs. and cuts to 155.So he might come out a lot stronger for this one. Not being so depleted for a couple of days really helps. He might come out more explosive than he ever has. But as far as the outcome goes I dont know, I wouldnt put money on this match.

whoever wins, it's gonna be a great fight.
we arn't getting UFC46 in australia due to lack of demand
gonna have to wait for a h/l clip,
or break into a house with satellite in the middle of the night
and just beg and plead with the owners

WOW, well ok, looks like I completely underestimated Penn there. Good job BJ, may you have a long title reign you definitely earned it.

I was at a UFC party Yesterday & out of 9 People
I was the only 1 who felt BJ was going to Win.

My comments were this Huges Can't stand With him
& he does not have the mat skills to compete with Bj
Being in a Room full of Wrestlers They Thought i was Nuts
1 Guy even fell to the Floor Laughing at me.

But in The End i was the 1 with a smile

One thing I didn't like was Hughes focusing so much on the weight classes, "BJ is lighter it is disrepectful to move up a weight class" Well that was the original premise of the UFC, no weight classes fighters fight. So BJ gave up about 30lbs and made the win that much sweeter. Actually speaking of sweet what was the deal about kissing hughes on the mouth Not cool BJ

Great fight almost Ironic that Hughes got taken out by the same move he used to win his last fight

Me, personally, I think B.J. Penn got LUCKY & that was it. Matt Hughes just was not in his right mind apparently, I have never seen Hughes roll over on his back when he wasn't in a good position & roll over into a worse position than before & get himself into worse trouble, I have never seen him do that. Bottom line, I think if Matt would have been on his game, B.J. Penn would have been lunch meat for Matt Hughes. IMO.

                      yea, what ever!

                      taekwondoguys,

hey, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. I guess you have never rolled with someone the same caliber as BJ. BJ kept so much pressure on Matt that he had to do those moves to stay alive as long as he did. It was not 30 lbs BJ gave up either. He walks around 165lbs. I believe Matt cuts to make weight, and BJ had to gain a little. So he was only out weighed by maybe 10lbs... Yea Matt is stronger! But his grappling skills are no where near as good as BJ's. Matt rolled with Luke Stewart at the Grapplers quest, Luke is only 170lbs, and maybe rolled for about two years if that, when they grappled, and Matt could not finish him at all... Only won by an advantage.

Bj's take downs are top notch, maybe as good as Matts. When Matt shot in, BJ reversed it.. Had nothing to do with Matt being out of his game. Matt has wrestled for most of his life, he has no excuses if he could not pull the take down off. And BJ, one of the fasted, and most flexible I have ever rolled with. The whole fight did not suprise me one bit! if they fight again, it will be just about the same thing, or Matt will get KO'd.
BJ is too fast with too much skill....

Oh, and by the way,, this is not my Opinion.. it was proven the other night...

You fight the way you train.... and Penn definitely out-trained Hughes.
Penn probably busted his ass like crazy while Hughes thought it would be another cakewalk. Penn proved the old adage true, "it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog." Penn wanted it more.

But before the fight.... I'll admit I thought Hughes was going to steamroll him. Penn proved me wrong.

That was the fight of the night. BJ, plain and simple out fought a technical fight with his skill. And then his BJJ instructor went out showed where BJ's skill came from.

Matt Hughes is great, but even the greatest have someone out there that can beat them!
