I don't know much about the laws that could be against you if you put to sleep or break someones arm/leg because of selfdefense, but if I ever get into a streetfight and I use my BJJ I wouldn't go looking for a submission. Like all of you know in a streetfight there's no tapping. Instead I would use my skills to control my oponent on the ground, getting the dominant position or inmovilizing him(example, putting him in a triangle choke and instead of choking him out start pounding him) and start pounding till he KO's or until he can't fight anymore so I can standup knowing he won't get up again or if he does he won't choose to fight me again.

That's how I would use my BJJ. I would use it to have control on the ground, but not to choke or break someone's arm, etc.

Hit and run, son. Hit and run.

If I survived an altercation, I'd just run and hide. (SF escape and evasion techniques come in handy)

Also, if i'm the guy who 'won' the fight I would assume that makes the other guy KO'd or at least unable to get away. And so, if there was chance of any retaliation in the form of a law-suit or a drive-by shooting because I beat him - i'd take his wallet. Give him his cash back (coz i'm such a nice guy) it's the I.D I want. I'd tell him I didn't want the situation to go any further (might even explain that I had to defend my own life) and make sure he knows that now *I* know his name and where he lives. Anything happens to me or my family as revenge, and his house will be burned down... while his family are sleeping in it. So therefore it's probably best if we both just 'let it go'.

By the way, he might assume that if he kills you, the threat is cancled out. So best to inform him that his name and address will be given out to several friendly characters. Just in case.

The things we have to do to protect ourselves, huh?

            ..
look I don't train BJJ but I have think that in a street fight some good stand-up grappling together with effective pre-emptive strikes are the key to go back home safe - you don't wanna go to the ground like in tournaments.
Of course if we talk about ending up in the court, it's better to KO the bad guy with a punch than chokin' him out...
