  • Shredder Seminar initial thoughts

    Hey all,
just kicking off this thread because its monday at work and I'm just bubbling to rip my bosses face off...

Seriously though, am penning this to let you know how the Shredding went on Sunday and tell you that you all missed out on an incredible seminar.

Firstly, a great big thankyou to Richard, Les and all the others. They made a great entertaining day of it, I would have paid that much money just to listen to the banter (Nearly wet myself laughing when Rich simulated ripping off an ear, put it to his lips and with bulging eyes shouted "I got your EAR now motherfuck, CAN YOU HEAR ME?"

And thankyou to everyone who attended, there was such a great atmosphere around, with everyone willing to talk AND listen about their respective arts, I'm especially thankful to those that came up and intimidated Bri Thai all the way through the day... "Hey your from the forums arn't you?!" (Bri looks for escape route) "maybe, whos asking?"

And everyone else reading this that didn't go you missed an opportunity to try and force Bri to pull down his trousers at knife point (whole new meaning to the word 'Mount').

Bri will be doing a review pretty soon (he's also reveiwing a bunch of Geoff Thompson stuff as well - can't wait) and seeing as I was his training partner I'll be adding my 2 pence about the seminar and also tha whole experience.

Doing this has helped me immensley, I can't believe the change in my own personal view of the world has been swayed so dramatically in such a short time. You'll get to hear more in the review, but I will say that I've had to grow up and learn to let go a lot of things that are very difficult for me to admit were wrong (even now I'm battling inside my head to justify it, even though I KNOW it wasn't very effective).

So anyway, before I gabble too much let me just say that overall in my own opinion 'The Shredder' concept is the most effective and deavistating self defence 'tool' I have ever had the pleasure to learn and I'll certainly be hoping to never use it outside of the Dojo.

I'll leave this with a final quote(ish) from Rich:
"If you get his knife and feel compelled out of the heat of the moment to stab him back, make sure you stab him in the ass. That way he doesn't die, you don't go to jail and just picture him trying to explain THIS (Shoves knife in crack and hobbles across room) in hospital!"

I would be interested in going to one of these seminars if Spank can organize a Northwest session !

Nit and Bri, I read the Shredder review in the JKD forum. If the shredder is so devastating and simple, is there any reason to be doing martial arts for self-defense purposes?

Yes. It is only a close quarter tool. You can't do it from too far out. It isn't a total system at all, so kick boxing and grappling are still essential.

Think of it as a fantastic addition, rather than a system in itself.
