  • NHB fighters in the Sydney olympics

Were there any fighters we know of in the olympics? I know Vitor was close to make the Brazilian boxing team, and that Couture has done some national team wrestling, but did anyone from the NHB world actually get into the olympics?
Just wondering, too much spare time, I guess...

Actually Belfort had no hope of getting in the Brazil boxing team. Another example of Urban Myths that start on the internet. He cant box for $hit and was never seriously considered for the team.

Couture and Henderson were there as spectators. Neither were a part of the U.S 2000 wrestling team. Couture has been an alternate in the past and Henderson has been on the team but not this year.

There was noone else as far as I know.

Thanks Shimora, but I heard once that Vitor did a qualifying match for the olympic team but couldn't beat the number 1 amateur boxer in Brazil, and lost the place. Guys like Illoukhine are good wrestlers and Judoka, due to their Sambo skills, were there no Russian fighters?

Matt Lindland won a medal in Sydney, Greco-Roman wrestling (cant remember if it was gold or silver). Part of RAW team and 3-0 in nhb, victories over Travis Fulton and one of Gokor's students. He will likly fight on the UFC Japan card.

NHB Spice, yes I heard that story about Belfort. I also heard that he completely killed his chances of getting in the team when he did not show up for the trials.
We all "hear" these things or read them on some internet messageboard but did you see it in a newspaper or on a legitimate News service? Im sure, like me you didnt.

Vitor may well have had the potential a few years ago but he has blown his chances of ever being a top fighter. His personal demons will continue to destroy him. Vitor is the Darrell Strawberry of NHB.

            Demons?

What are Belfort's personal demons anyway? Seemed not that long ago he was top dog who everybody was afraid of and now nobody even mentions him in same breath with Sak or Frank or whatever.

            What happened?

I think the Couture fight really took the heart out of Vitor. He hasn't been the same since. That fight also gave other fighters (like Sak) a road map of how to fight Vitor. And I don't believe that Belfort has the ability to take his game to a new level. Belfort's demon is that he knows he can be beat by the top guys.
