  • Rare martial arts

is it possible to find a good teacher in the US that teaches teh "true" or "right" way of some of the more rare martial arts...like for example Escrima or Tang soo do or shotokan or savate...etc.

I didn't think Shotokan waws rare. Also, if you know the "right" way, then you shouldn't have any trouble finding one.

Yea, shotokan definatly isn't rare, and in my opinion, it isn't worth learning.

Tang Soo Do is not a self defense art, its a bleeding flashy sports points sparring gymnastic generic pants (and not the stretchy briefs type either, full on baggy 'Y' front pants, with a fur trim, in leopard skin, and pink, with dangley lacy bits)

Sorry to troll, its very unfair for me to tar all TSD practitioners with the same brush but I have come across several schools in the UK and I am really really surprised that what is being taught is useful for anything other than 'sports' fighting.

Guy Mezger has a gym in Dallas that teaches kickboxing and submission wrestling I think. Check out getting into kickboxing there.... Guy Mezger is a great fighter.

I live in Ky there is actually one good escrima instructor in Bowling Green but I can't recall his name. An assistant instructor at are school is a black belt trhough him and teaches us the concepts. I personally would never take an art that focuses on weapon fighting. Its good to know the basics but in the street you rarely need more then that. I do think escrima and other filipino arts are good I just wouldn't ever train in only that.

But escrima doesn't only focus on weapon fighting.... there is ground fighting, throwing, striking..... only taught later....

weapons are taught first for several reasons:

                        * being attacked with a weapon is far more dangerous than without a weapon....
you can afford to take punches, or end with a broken arm and go to hospital this is not necessary true with knive thrusts/slashes can easily bring you to the grave....
therefore it is necessary to start as soon as possible to learn to defend yourself against an armed agressor......
to defend against weapons there is no secret, you must know how they are used... that is why you have first to study armed combat....

*a stick, knive, machette travels much faster than any punch, kick.... and strikes can come from nearly any direction which is not the case with punches-elbows-kicks....
if you are skilled enough to deal with this kind of attacks defending yourself empty handed will be easy..... you will have superior speed, timing, footwork, reactions, that will make the empty hand techniques you will learn very efficient..... besides many strikes-defenses that work with/against weapons are easily transposable...

its good to know the basics but in the street you rarely need more then that.
The basics won't keep you alive in a knive fight..... it's hard work to get a reasonable chance of surviving if you cannot run....

How often do you see a knife fight compared to empty hand. I didn't say escrima or any filipino art was bad I just prefer other arts. I train with escrima. Just not extensively. I have also done work with knives.

It takes years of intense practice to be able to get a fair amount of chances of survival in a knive encounter.... Many fma instructors with poor skills teach drills only, this is of little use, gives you a fake sense of confidence and ultimatelly gets you killed.... like in mma-MT-boxing you have to spare full contact and after attaining a decent level train with sharp weapons....

I prefer to train for what most generally happens and most generally a fight doesn't involve a knife.
