I almost like Royce and the Gracie Academy more now that they have lost a few. Its like when they were undefeated..I just wanted more and more and more. But now that I have accepted that they can lose...It makes me realize just how amazing it was that he won as many as he did. He really was an icon to the world and I think the first true example ever of a little guy that beat big dudes consistantly.

The gracies really are pretty cool if you think about it.

Yes, but if they STFU and learned some humility, they would be twice as cool.

Royce needs to train with Rickson for whoever he fights next. Not with Helio,Rorion,Royler,Renzo,Ralph,Charlse,Ryan,Carlson,Carlson Jr.But RICKSON!

Rickson would be good to train him to fight Wallid again.
Rickson can't do anything to help him fight Saku any better though.

I think the Gracies should go visit Takada dojo...at least send someone over to spy on them...

            Royce

Mixed martial arts competitions have reached a new level. The calaber of skill and brute strength has evolved astronomically ie. Mark Kerr, Sak, Igor... Royce and his semi-passive style does not stand a chance. He needs to get out behind that 'I'm a Gracie tough guy' attitude and start fighting like a real man.

everyone tell me what you think of this....

              In a response to ichibanman...

One thing that I have heard in the past that I always keep in mind and something that I have kinda always believed and something alot of other people seem to see eye to eye on as well, is the prospect of what jiu-jitsu for jiu-jitsu's sake can do.

John Bennet posted once that you only need a formula one race car if you are totally involved in racing and that is your livlihood. But for the rest of us our Honda Accord works just fine. Ichiban is right..there is a whole new level of athlete out there. The sport is so hard now that you have to be a formula one fighting machine to get anywhere. But for us folks at home just good solid BJJ skills will work just fine and then some. If Royce were to step up and train like a real man or whatever, and get huge and start kicking and punching and taking all kinds of supplements and lifting...it just wouldn't be jiu-jitsu anymore...it would be back to who has the best genetics.

However, no matter how much Royce loses now..the amazing thing is that the whole reason that we have such monsters in the sport is because nobody could beat Royce.

NORMAL MARTIAL ARTS MEN COULD NOT BEAT ROYCE EVEN WITH AS MUCH AS A 100LB ADVANTAGE.

Thusly we had to create the Kerrs and Igors. So now these monsters may be able to beat royce...but what is truly remarkable is that in the begining Royce bested all comers armed only with jiu-jitsu. All he did to prepare for his fights was just normal daily training at the academy. He didn't have genetics, or size, or strength, or crosstraining. All he had was jiu-jitsu. And that was all he needed to single handedly change the face of martial arts forever.

Who can hate Royce? And who can argue with jiu-jitsu?

I can say this. Despite how I've felt about Royce's comments to some fighters, etc...he is always the man I show when I want someone to get a good "picture" of what I do. So without Royce there would be none of this stuff today. We'd still be doing flying kicks.

                Ichibanman,
there can be only one number one.

                And it's ME!!

..nah, I'll be second best I guess.
                carry on.

After watching the sport for so long, I finally appreciated what Royce meant to it. It was the smaller man overcoming stronger heavier opponents. That's something I never saw until todays new breed of stronger faster, and more technically skilled fighters came in and set the standards higher.

I do agree with Ronin that most of the family should learn some humility. Who knows, maybe they'll end up like Mark Coleman who grew to be much more humble than when he started. I'll never forget the end of the Sak/Renzo fight, though. That was class, gentlemen.

For so long, I hated and cheered against Royce, and I was also one of those guys that thought long and hard about how to beat his style, as well as which fighters would be able to do the same. In that regard, it's almost like bjj won, because the rest of the world is either adding it to their arsenal, or they test it against bjj to see how it stacks up. It was at one point the style to beat. Now with the cross training, the style wars are no longer important in the sport. Only the fighters themselves (as well as their training partners).

I didn't start studying bjj because of Royce, though. That's when I just started to rethink my training (testing against wrestlers, judoka, and other grapplers). What they did do was issue the wake up call to the rest of the world (except Brazil ). I didn't start bjj until a friend of mine (a wrestler) that we rolled with started at the Jsect Academy here in Vegas. Then he started showing us some stuff.

                  Ryu,
You don't do flying kicks anymore?

I admire Royce for what he accomplished. But you also have to hand it to Rorion. He's sort of the Don King of MMA (loved and hated). Unfortunately, I don't think Royce or Rorion will have a second act. The best the Torrance Academy has produced since Royce is Joe Pardo and Lowell Anderson, who both got their asses kicked.

                      Jaguar Wong,
Occasionally yes, but I like to rely on more "realistic" techniques

                        Ryu:

Realistic techniques? Like the "Fireball" and "Hadouken"?

                        Jaguar Wong:

Just for the record, I wasn't bagging on Renzo. For my money, he's the best Gracie around.

Heck, I would like Royce again too if he would just shut up and admit he lost.

Royce DID admit he was beaten, as did Rorion, and they gave props to Sak. They seemed to have more of a sense of humor about it. It's in the latest Black belt ( although it isn't the most recent interview) year book.
And the latest rumor is that Takada wants a rematch with Royce st the next Pride, and if he loses, he'll retire for good.
And from what I saw at the last Pride ( Takada doing decent against Igor), I'd say it'd be a good test.
I give Takada credit for going from a worker, who got killed in real matches, to somewhat of a challenge.

                            Gracie humility? Respect for Takada?

What is the MMA World coming to?

                              Royce

Regardless of what Royce achieves from here on in,what he and Rorion have done for the MMA world cannot be underestimated. The Gracie name will continue to be dominant, and the attitude, like it or not, will stay!
