  • Renewal of rivalry between bjj and judo?

Could be. BJJ and judo had a major rivalry when Helio was fighting. There was also a match against Rickson and the top fighter of Katos school(same kato which beat Helio) But I think the rivalry could get renewed, great judo fighters like Yoshida are popping up and fighting the Gracies. I think if BTT and Brazil Dojo joined along the rivalry will be completely renewed. Opinions?

I train once a week at a local Judo club. In general, instead of embracing better ground work...judo has chosen to manipulate its rules to the point that its almost impossible to even learn ground technique.

The guys at the judo club often ask me to teach them some ground grappling gems but whenever I suggest somthing to them..they say, "No, we wouldn't be allowed to do that". In Judo, 30 sec on the ground would be an absolute eternity and very rare, you can't even close your guard on the ground the feet must remain unlocked. Also no grabbing of the sleeves just to name a few.

If there is a new rivalry between judo and jiu-jitsu...judo has to change or it hasn't a prayer.

We have some Judokas competing at our BJJ tournament this Sunday.
I will let you know how it went.
Definitely I will ask them questions about why they want to compete in BJJ rules and what make they think they can win. Obviously, they do not change style and are quiet happy with Judo, most probalby they are to keen to fight in BJJ rules.
      Well, that if they win...

Well Judo's groundfighting is extremely limited. You get stood up very, very quickly. You do not have to be a good ground fighter to do judo. I mean check out the Silva vs. Yoshida fight, Silva did extremely well against Yoshida on the ground even though he isn't a Judo Olympist. I do not think the Judo people will do to well in the tournament because of the limited groundfighting. Besides that there are difference against throws in judo and bjj. In bjj you have to land your opponent in a manner that you get a dominant position while in judo you just need to get the person down. In Japan judo blackbelts enter bjj white belt competetions. But tell me how they do.

It's very possible for a Judoka to do well in a BJJ tourney as long as they focus on winning by points. Get a throw, get 2 for the take down, then just stand up. It's kinda of cheap, but it's doable. Judo does need to get back to it's roots more though. In trying to make the sport crowd friendly (lots of big throws) they have cut out to much of the actual combat of it. I take Judo to get some good take downs, but BJJ is definitely my focus but of it's more relaxed rules and complete grappling game.
