  • Cung Le: How would he do in MMA?

Forgive me, I forget to click the poll button on the previous post on this subject.

How do you think Cung Le, the San Shou Kung Fu master would do in MMA?

I have seen his "Battle at the Bellagio fights," and he looks impressive, but there are several things that make me wonder:

    1. Either he is that good, or his competition is not that good.
    2. He is not a complete fighter(punching, kicks, takedowns, etc.) for what his mastership should entail(at least from what I have seen, maybe I am wrong, I have only seen two of his fights)

    Strengths
    1. Takedowns(Especially Scissors Kick)
    2. Kicks
    3. Presence

    Weaknesses
    1. Boxing skills
    2. Footwork

I am not saying that he is not the real deal, but what do you guys think? He will definitely have to improve on his weaknesses to survive in MMA.
    11
He would be among the best(Become Champion, a top ranked contender, etc.)
    36.36%
    4
He would do well(Win a good amount of his fights, win respect)
    18.18%
    2
He would do alright(Win some, lose some, not be taken too seriously as a contender)
    45.45%
    5
He would not do well, he should stick to just San Shou competition

I think he would do pretty well if he trained for it, I am not an expert on mma competitions but he does look pretty good, I agree with his hand work seeming to lack a bit but i think it might be a question of training differently, his footwork must be pretty good in order to get those scissor kicks going so well, but i could be wrong..
all in all, I quite like Cung Le and he makes SanShou look very good and just that bit more exiting that Muay Thai, what with the throws and takedowns etc..

there u have it, HuSanYan has walked out of the gate of the Shaolin Temple to the nearest Internet Cafe to post a reply to this fine thread. Good Day.

Another weakness in Le's fighting, isn't so much in his skill, but more in his conditioning. I've seen a number of his fights and from my observation he tires after the 2nd/3rd rounds. I think he wins impressively when he is able to knock guys out early on, and if not, then he can usually "do enough" with his impressive take-down skills to win the match; especially against weak opposition. The last fight I saw of Le was with Petit; that guy was clueless to the idea of being taken down (or with fighting in general) and at no point did he develop any sort of strategy to overcome. It was sad and Le could have easily KO'd him if Le, himself, were not tired. His boxing skills in general have a bit to be desired for as well as overall offensive attacks - he has a tendency to be a bit "one dimensional" especially when he gets tired. I think as far as MMA is concerned, he will have to train and condition a lot more. It will take more than a "scissor" takedown to win against a top UFC or Pride fighter.

It tough to tell, whenever I've seen him he's always fighting unknown guys that are weaker fighters than him. It would be good for MMA to bring him in for a few fights and see how he develops.

don't forget that Maruice Green was an all-kickboxer, and trained 6 monthes w/ Shamrock's Lion Den then won UFC.

Obviously, you will get good at something in a short time if you train for it provided you are genetically talented enough.
